Has anyone here found work by approaching local businesses for seo work? Im just looking for succesful action plans any of you have in the past.

I was thinking along the lines of email stating how many searches there are for, lets say 'hotels in cardiff', pointing out their current rankings and what benefits a better presence could bring them.

What value could i put on this and would it be a good idea to do work before payment?

Maybe do half of the work or more so you get practice putting it together. Then you can email them with some details, might make it easier to sell

From my experience it is very difficult to get clients when you work from home.

I would say, Step number 1 => move into business environment - get a table or small office in office building. Once you will get personal contacts with other companies - you will be visible. Business people will start asking you questions and then, quite soon (if you are ok) you will have your 1st seo contract.

Yes - I said 'ok' not 'good' or 'super'.

The 1st thing - you have to be visible and approachable (strange word) all the time. The level of your skills will determine the price and further clients, but not the 1st contract (nor the 2nd one)
