I have a site which I was thinking of upgrading to WPMU, but it has a WP install with a lot of data in it now. I supposed I could export it delete the install and then install WPMU, but I was wondering if there is any sort of upgrade path.

I've done some searching but really did not find anything on this on the WPMU site.

No, there is no other way. I had the same problem some month ago and unfortunately the export/import way it risky too. My DB bugged and cant import on my wpmu blog.

Maybe a save way would be to but you existing wp blog in a subfolder and make a sub for it. Then you just need to install a new wpmu without any import/export.

I was afraid of this. I found a migration strategy which involves exporting the data from the existing install with an SQL script and then importing into the WPMU install. I may pay around with this offline. I just can't afford to have this site down for any length of time as its a good money maker for me and I'll lose a bunch of cash if I have problems getting it back up.

I guess I'll need to do some more thinking on this and decide if its worth the risk
