What themes / platforms can you recommend either for or against when starting up a blog these days?

Is Thesis 2.0 still high on the list of contenders? How does it compare to the Genesis framework with regard to SEO / load times / usability?

Interested to hear your opinions and experiences!

    Cheers, Hootz!

I really love Platform Pro 2.0 for Wordpress, very flexible customizable theme - you can create pretty much anything you want out of it. It's rather pricey though but if you are a serious blogger go for it.

Thesis 2 and Genesis both are highly SEO optimized and you can also check WooTheme(my personal recommendation)

Platform Pro = Pagelines am I right? Looks great and runs very fast, so it's $97 and the monthly payment which I guess you'd cancel. Would you mind PM'ing me your site you built with it please so I can see what a normal user can do with it?

By Wootheme do you mean any theme in particular?

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Flexsqueeze. I can make it look anything I want with zero coding. Try it with Thesis. IMO, it is shite, but popular. McDonalds is popular too but burgers are shite.

Lol this is true. I remember trying Flexsqueeze a few years back, I'll take another look to see if it's improved since.

Depends on what you want to do with the theme.

1 - Thesis - fast loading, flexible to some degree but you need to do some serious CSS/PHP if you really want to customize it

2 - Flexsqueeze - very versatile, but slower loading than Thesis and slightly less SEO features - you can make up for this with an SEO plugin

3 - Platform Pro - good SEO, fast loading - expensive

4 - Woo - Woo has several good, customizable themes of many styles - all have similiar setup and are fairly customizable - not much SEO optimization tho - fairly fast loading

The bottom line is... find a theme that suits what you want to do. If you need lots of ad space - find one that has it. Etc.

There are many good themes out there - but having one that has the features you need built-in negates the need for extra plugins which can slow your site down.

Think of Thesis 2.0 as the Vista of theme development. It marks a different direction than earlier Thesis releases that may be very exciting in the future, but it was poorly executed on all fronts. If you really want to use it, grab a copy of Marketer's Delight from Kolakube themes.

The truth is that SEO ready themes are a marketing strategy. SEO should not really ever be built directly into a theme, it belongs as a plugin functionality (you want to take your SEO with you, right?).

When I look for a theme, I look at the following "features":
    -Valid and efficient code
    -Quick loading speed
-Degrades well down to IE7 at least
-Responsive design (especially for squeeze pages)

I wonder why no one is naming catalyst theme for wordpress. Over 800+ design options, highly customizable , good load speed, Option to add custom CSS n hooks, responsive. Best part is unlimited license, that means one license is good enough for all of your client's websites :)

Never heard of that one Deadsoul, on the face of it it looks good. Their site only shows a showcase though, no demo sites so I can't run pagespeed.

I'd stay away from Woo as far as I could. Their themes got hacked all the time and they still don't do proper pentests.

No one seems to have mentioned this but I'd go with the best support. In my experience the best support comes with the Genesis framework. Unless it's changed recently Thesis support usually consists of some smart a** telling you how dumb you are for not already knowing the answer. In all fairness I've been building sites for quite some time (mostly Thesis and Genesis based) so I don't ask often and that could actually be better these days but since I KNOW Genesis is very helpful I'd recommend them over Thesis. In general Thesis is maybe a bit better from a programming perspective but Genesis is way better with the design part. As they say Thesis is for programmers and Genesis is for designers.

That being said, most of the changes in Genesis you'll make is going to require you to use a bit of code. There are great tutorials and helpful support people but if you're not comfotable with that I'd say either pick a Genesis theme you'll use as is (other than real basic things like a header, etc.) or go with something else. For just a personal blog that probably won't be an issue.

As far as Woo Themes goes I don't generally build sites with them but have worked on a number of them for customers. Which means I've seem how thier themes can be buggy from time to time. There's a couple decent themes among them I'm sure but personally I prefer to stick with Genesis or Thesis depending on what I'm building a site for.

i LOVE genesis from studio press. Thesis is ugly.. in term of SEO it doesn't offer a single SEO feature that you can't get for free from All-In-One SEO Plugin or HeadSpace SEO Plugin (both free).

genesis has a bunch of easy to follow tutorials and a great forum.

What about heatmap theme ? unlimited licence, fast response in support. I use it and have good results with it. Any negative reviews ?
