Anyone use images as a source for traffic? How to rank for #1?

Hello fellow members, I had a quick question...

I run a fairly large site which literally has images for days, and I was wondering how google works out keywords? I mean... you could have XYZ.jpg but it might be indexed under XYZ + "Keyword" or "Keyword" + XYZ..

Anyway, I get a fair bit of traffic and want to optimize this part of my site over the coming weeks, I cleaned up the attachment pages (which also get indexed - I think its like 12000 images so far). I added on the description which also gets pulled through onto the media pages in wordpress, I want to try to use these images to pull in a little extra traffic as my niche is pretty saturated. I get on average about 100 hits a day from quite poorly optimized images (with just image name being what I took a picture of and no ALT or Description).

I assume to rank for images? It pulls the description / alt, and whilst on the topic. Is there anyway to get more backlinks from images? I've obviously got sites like Flickr and pinterest down, but any other ideas would be grand. Hoping it adds a little to my advertising / traffic flow as the pages had no advertising on before but now feature a few ads :)

    Thank you in advance

I use Yoast.. Each of the images is indexed in those which are in webmasters :) I have LOADS of images in google.. just wondering how it works it out. As I would love to upload images only (not embedded in a post) and just drop them aimed at one keyword. But unsure of how Google works it out :(

Images are ranked as content... Original ones will rank higher!

Super. I didn't know that ^.^ I create original photographs for my website (usually around 30 per review) which are pretty decent.. and I get so confused because they pop up all over the place. I usually name them for example...

    "Product + Review"

Does google favour images that are being linked to a lot or? Backlinks completely irrelevant in this game.

Like for everything else backlinks will help the images rank, but the fact that you have original images make them rank higher.

It easy, lets suppose you are doing a review for a amazon product and u use the same images that are on amazon, along with 100 other marketers which use the same images. Google cant display the same image over and over again on the search results. So this is where the original images have an edge.

As am I ;D My niche is pretty heavy when it comes to actual Google, but my images are all over google images and I do get a high CTR considering they are just attachment pages / images on my articles..

Makes me want to take more photos and just upload them as media into the back of my website for some steady traffic with minimal effort :)

Thanks for the advice Blackice! ^.^

    Awesome forum as always.

I can't figure out how to double quote #fail. You can check out my journey and you might understand why I'm asking this question ^.^ Very happy that my photos are all original and I take the time to request products for physical review... Shame about cameras being a huge down cost! xD Trying to be very much so white hat, and I love taking images of products.

Images from a high authority source seem to rank better, as do images from a high traffic source. Having the right alt tags is of course also key. I'd guess that shares and forum posts re-using that image by image link also help, but this is merely a guess.

    BlackIce said it best.

ORIGINAL (your own) pics will always give you the best chance.
