I've had my headphones for 3 years and its finally starting to show signs of breaking down. They were really great headphones:
    Mdrxd200: Headphones Sony
And it only costs under $40

The problem though is these are massive headphones with a very long cable (which I usually tie up with an elastic band to make it shorter). I'm willing to spend under $100 for headphones and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good brands? My first priority is that it will last for years (hopefully as long as my previous headphones). Second priority is that the sound quality is good. Third priority would be portability and size.

Do you have any experience with them and know how long they usually last?

Ive got an old pair of Skull candy cheapos and Ive had them 4 years and sat on them multiple times. My research was based on having 5 hours to kill and going through every set of cans I could find in Manchester. I know how good the Dre's were because I just dropped £300 on them but i found a lot of dissapointment in the £100-£200 range Bose-Sennheiser-Sony etc. I would say the Skull candys were almost as good as the dre's for a fraction of the dough.

If you want quality, especially sound quality i would defenitely go for Sennheiser Headphones http://en-us.sennheiser.com/headphones-headsets

I had one for years, perfect sound! They are pricy but the sound quality is just amazing, those Germans know how to make good stuff! The sony headphones are good aswell and the long cable is very usefull when you're Dj'ing and need space!

No offense, but just because you payed £300 for them doesn't make them good ...!
The Dre Beats sound horrible and have way too much bass and they cannot be used without batteries ... Don't get me wrong, they are not bad headphones but are way to over priced for what you get. OP, take a look at this site, http://www.head-fi.org/ these people know what they are talking about !

These headphones from Bose are definitely the best ones with a reasonable price that I have owned.

I can't remember the name of the model, but I'll research it for ya. Please note that these are kinda noise cancelling, so you won't hear much more than what you listen to on your computer / mp3. :)

EDIT: Apparently the name of the model is just Bose AE Around-ear. :) Great headphones.

I picked up a set of Yurbuds "Ironman" series a couple months ago. They aren't the kind that go over your head tho.. but they sound great! and I think are around $30 at Walmart or Best Buy. They are great for working out and or running too. They have a special locking mechanism so they never fall out.

I made the mistake of reading the what hi fi review before I dropped lots of money in the past. Now I bring my i-pod and listen to 3-4 tunes on every set speakers before I make a decision. I would never drop £300 on a set of Dres for myself but someday your 17 year old son will ask you for them and you wont have much choice unless you want to be bad dad. At £300 they are overpriced but "horrible" no...you are joking me they are really good Cans, and if you can afford to buy them you can probably pay for two batteries.

All ears and listening tastes are different. The Sennheisers are good for Classical music but have no noise...anyway thats irrelevent. Decent Sennheisers are out of budget. On budget under $100 go to a shop and try the Hesh 2 and tell me what you think.

You won't regret if you try AKG. For around $100 you could find entry level pro headphones.

Yep, tastes are different, young kids want those because they where made believe that they are the best out there ... like i said they are not bad headphones, if you like hiphop/rap that extra bass sounds good. But i think (well, i hope) my doughter will know better when she turns 17 because her dad wil have explained the difference between marketing hyped products and quality products lol

But for the OP's budgets of around a $100, the Hesh could be a good choice. But calling Sennheiser only good for classical music ... go to a specialized shop, take your time and try the upper range ones, you will be amazed! Yes, they are pricey but quality costs money! Great quality sound doesn't mean good bass ;)

Skullcandy & Urbanears are possibly one of the worse headphones in terms of sound quality. I don't know about the Beats by Dre, but I guess they're not worth the price either. :)

Bose and Seinheiser is my bet on the headphones category. Had a 50$ Zebronics with virtual 5.1 surround sound in headphones, which was worth the money spent on it.
But I am saving up for a Bose next, let's see when that happens. When you do purchase one, let me know how the acoustics go.

Dont buy overprized Beats or anything like that.

Get Sennheiser or Bose if you want quality.
