I'm looking to become halfway decent at running an Adwords campaign. Can anyone recommend a good guide or YouTube tutorial to teach me the ins and outs of Adwords? I need to run a campaign for a dentist in a couple of months and if I don't think that's enough time to get good I will just outsource it to someone else.

Google will literally setup the account and guide you through all of it. Aside from that the help pages on Adwords have some great advice.

I know but I don't want to take traditional Google advice. Their advice on SEO is to just put out good content and hope other people back link to your website and talk about your site on social media. Is their advice just as cheesy regarding Adwords?

No, the study materials will show you how to use their interface and they have a certification program to go with it if you felt so inclined. Laubster is right also, Perry Marshall has good books for Adwords. There is also a free Lynda adwords training video set in a thread on here.

Better you can use the "Google Step by Step Starter Guide" which is in their website itself.
To become an expert, you should run the campaign with the help of trail and error method only we can learn more.
