I've just got power back after going without for several hours. I know that most quasi-affordable UPS solutions would not be able to last me several hours, but at least they would have given me a chance to save files, and shut things down gracefully.

The last time I got a backup, it was an APC, and it was just "all right". I am sure they have come a long way, but I am also sure that at least some of them are utter crap and don't live up to their hype.

Any first hand experience/suggestions would be much appreciated.

join the club. i went thru four apc backups before i got one that worked: one had a dead battery, while another unit kept beeping for no apparent reason.

couple of weeks ago the power went out for a second and the user files got trashed. so
i had to create a new account, but i'm still having problems.

i got an "apc 1300va 780 watt" backup with lcd and so far it's helped a few times.
gives approx 30 minutes of power.

avoid the "tripp-lite" brand... they're pure junk. the one i had kept shutting off by itself!

Thanks for the tips!

At this point I'm debating between CyberPower and APC. Not thrilled by APC, but not sure I want to roll the dice with CyberPower.

I'm ready to spend a couple hundred bucks or so on a good unit, but it really seems like the consumer grade units all have quality control issues.

Choices choices.

mge is a good brand, afaik they recently bought out apc (or was it the other way round?), it all depends on how vital what ur protecting is

get at LEAST a line interactive standby ups, if you REALLY pedantic about ur shit get true double online

apc is a good brand, chances are you just bought a cheapie
