OK, out the blue my husband and his friends get the idea of selling character. They found a few people willing to max out characters in WOW and sell them for about 500/each - or that is how much they want to sell them.

First off, I did a few searches and found a few places. As far as I can tell, as a non-player, this character has everything and selling for a whopping $2,999.99 (and that's with a 57% off sale):

Its all well and good that these sites are up and running and promoting the sale, but are they actually selling?

    Thanks

    realpoor .com
    markeedragon.com
    fagex .net

There are many others, but some are inactive. You can also try rpgreseller .com as well as playerauctions (this is probably the best solution).

No, that price that you stated is ridiculous. The highest amount you can receive for a maxed out and maxed geared charcter would be around 1k (if you are lucky) and you would have to take some serious precautions.

    I hope this helped.

Thanks for the sites, I'll definitely check those out. That site that I quote made me hopeful, but it definitely was a tad to good to be true. But, having read about those folks who spent $100,000 or so on virtual property on Entropia so recently, I just thought I'd ask. But, of course, that story is different since the buyer can actually profit off of that inventment

Right now the only profitable way of making money on World of Warcraft would be stealing accounts and selling them off.

The chinese drove the price down into oblivion.

I used to make a nice amount doing this a few years ago, but the market was driven down to the point it was no longer worth pursuing, even with bots to level accounts with.
I actually forgot about this, but I have a level 80 death knight character on World of Warcraft with an entire guild bank full of materials, fairly good gear if I remember correctly, and around 30,000 gold on the account. I pretty much forgot about it, it expired and couldn't bother to find a buyer...
I used to sell a level 80 character with basic gear for $300-400, but the price is much lower now I believe, unless you can find a buyer who doesn't know what they are doing.
Selling game currency can be profitable, depending on the game. Again, automation is key, or cheap labor.
