I am sure we all remember JC Penney and there use of black hat tactics to rank on Page 1 and nearly position 1 for most every "shopping" keyword, if not here is a link to the article:
    Code:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/13/business/13search.html?pagewanted=all
This tactic ensured them one of the best online shopping results ever, of course later google went on to slap them a bit. However a year has passed and I am sure they have learned their lesson. With the budget they have for SEM/SEO I am sure they are applying some creative and costly ideas and practices to be sure they have as good a year this year as they did the last.

Anyone actively charting or reverse engineering there efforts over the past several months/year?

Although I do applaud your creative thinking process :)... but I can't help to think that they're doing much of the same stuff (excluding the doorway pages.)

A website with great unique content, correctly coded meta tags, good navigation, and backlinking from authoritative like-sites is a huge factor (we're talking 3/4ths...) of rank.

Granted, there's always more to it... but let's not think too outside the box here. This box hasn't changed much ;P.

Yeah big money solves alot of SEM/SEO issues...lol....just wanting to see if any black hatters picked up any "extra" work JCP may be doing to get similar results to last year without tipping off big G.

I know that they rank high anyway, but I was amused with the fact that they were able to cash in during prime time right under the SE's nose. :)

With the money they spend on AdWords it's unlikely that they aren't going to suffer any real penalty for long. They will hire another black hat firm. Make millions, get caught, get penalized, blame their SEO firm, REPEAT.
