I have had a few websites that were on page 1 for a majority of the targeted keywords move down to pages 2 and 3 about 2 months ago.

The rankings seem to be stuck their and not moving no matter how many Press Releases, blog posts, local citations, website posts, social bookmarks and Tier 2 links I create.

I try to have very little anchors like 5-10% and the rest natural URL/brand name.

Anyone else see a similar trend or pattern?

Have you researched the page 1 competition in depth and compared to your website?
Keyword density, content size & frequency, onpage seo, backlink profiles, social, etc.

    Let me know :)

I've been experiencing a similar trend. Keywords stuck on bottom 1st, high 2nd page and no matter what I do - add content, links, social bookmarks - I can't seem to be able to move up.

Onsite optimization is good, lengthy and unique content. All seems right....any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

At that stage, I would try to reach out to influencers in your niche, beg or pay them for a link.

Yes, I seem to get stuck there for awhile too, if your building steady links i guess just need to be patient and see.

Awesome advice junglish08, these are good steps to take. I do compare my competitors websites in Open Site Explorer and Majestic SEO to see what links they have, how many and the anchor text diversity. I try to use those as bench marks.

Sometimes it can just be a matter of reaching the same amount of quality website links those competitors have.

Other times my websites have more links a higher Trust Flow and Page Authority and are still ranking lower so I add On-page SEO to help but to still no avail.

Keep the advice and feedback coming!

It is very common in Poland, and even has the name "google penalty -20"
This is the google penality for links with the keyword (too much). You can't do anything with it. Only cure for that is wait (sometime very long , for example 2 years), or change domain.

I have also been finding the same thing going on with a few of my sites. I put it down to the panda update rolling out slowly and everything is a bit slow at the moment, i am noticing not very much movement for any sites in any of my niches.I guess keep adding some quality back links slowly. You may wake up one day and find yourself half way up page 1

Interesting, I will check out the Google penalty 20. That is strange that there would be a penalty that would make sites stay on pages 2 and 3? You would they think would get moved from the top 100 completely

Yeah, my guess this is due to the mobile friendliness algorithm. It coincided with their changes a few months back.

I hope you remember that, couple of months ago, there was mobile friendliness algorithm arrived.
If you were using Google Webmasters, the message were get frequently in your message box section.
It was an indication to improve the presence, it seems you lacked in that and as a result, your rank ain't progressing.

    Update*

I took some of your advice from the thread and have noticed the following:

Websites positions have been moving up slowly. Keywords that were on page 2 are now in positions 10-12 (barely moved to the bottom of page 1 or top of page 2 but is progress!)

Keywords on pages 3-4 moved up a page so respectively seeing results on pages 2-3 for several websites.

Some of the strategies I utilized were:
PBNs with brand name keywords and little keyword anchor
Adding Tier 2 layer to Tier 1 sites.
Adding Local Citations to the websites that have a store front.

All the content created is also relevant to each website

I have also been having similar rankings here - bottom of page 1 and top to middle of page 2. I guess it could be a matter of time to move up with continuing to build up the back link profile. I also have a feeling boosting branded anchor text ratio may be able to help too.
