    Hi -

I have been attempting SEO on my local business site since about June. I've done all the recommended SEO things such as keywords in the title and meta descriptions, H1 with keyword, long tail keywords, adding to local directories, making sure the location and phone are on the homepage, adding to google maps and places as well as yahoo, bing. I added a blog like many SEO experts advised to - all original content, videos, and images consistently updating with a new post once to twice a week. I even guest blog on a major publications website linking back to the local business site. The only thing I think has gone wrong is the place of business moved about 3 months after my intial SEO attempts and I haven't gotten around to changing all the citations. I wasn't getting a lot of SEO traffic prior to changing addresses anyhow. I recently bought a domain with the keyword in it and redirected it to the site. Not sure if that will help.

Today I googled the keyword that I want to rank for and it's not even in the top 120 results. In my webmaster tools it looks to me like the blog keywords are ranking, not the actual business key word. I'm thinking the blog portion might be working against the business site.

I think I must have missed something a long the way. I've read Matthew Woodward, Neil Patel, Jacob King and alot of others I can't recall off the top of my head. Does any of this stuff really work or should I just invest in advertising?

Is your keyword very competitive or such?

What type of business is it?

Have you looked at Moz local to see what % the citations are out?
    https://moz.com/local/search

If you moved, would a press release saying you move be of any benefit?

The keyword is personal trainer. The top 3 results for our area is yelp, a site with 14 backlinks and another with 20. We have at least 100 if not more.

I don't know about press releases. I'd have to research how to go about doing that. The moz local is 58%. I got irritated after trying to edit the yahoo listing and haven't had a chance to do any more.

I am not an expert in any sense but a small business owner trying to understand and do some more by myself.

Do you have a Google Local/ My Business page done for this business? Having some effort with this should help you rank locally better.

I assume the Hummingbird updates that jumbled the local packs did you dirty? I know I did a beating.

There are a few people that correct citations and add more for you.

Bad or wounded citations are a bitch to clean up instead of working from a virgin set up.

Video blogging of exercises along with clients may be something to consider.......

I'm a big fan of blogging for local biz. It doesn't take much and it can really help with the incoming long-tail traffic.

One issue is the moving of the address, that can pose problems for you and it's important you get that rectified when you can.

I can't understand why you're not getting any headway though in organic, you should be getting somewhere for your efforts. What kind of link building have you done besides what you already mentioned?

Other link building would be putting a link to the blog in the signature for several fitness forums and sharing the blog posts on social media, facebook, twitter, linked, google+. We also have a youtube channel. We have done a few blog comments maybe 10 or less. In the past 30 days we've had 158 organic google traffic. No new clients though for past 4 months.

I wanted to try a tiered link building campaign but I'm not sure if that is the right strategy for local SEO? I don't want to get any penalties.

How sure are you of staying at you current address? I don't want you to piss any effort, time, and money away if you aren't going be there for a bit to take advantage realigning your citations.

For a bunch of) press release idea(s): have you gotten a new certification or ranking? Hired a new employee with a certain specialization or niche to announce to everyone? Will you donate an extra hour of training time to anyone who donates a toy to the Christmas Drive for X charity in the next 10 days?

I recall a thread about some people using their own PBN for local, Why not make your own? There is an affordable minone for $40 bucks as a deal on here I saw earlier.

    Guestposting or blogging?

    Buy some high backlinks?

Does Google see personal trainers as a local business keyword?

AKA does the local pack appear?

I would've thought that as they aren't technically a "real business" they shouldn't get a local result, and therefore you need to optimise a page specifically for your keyword.

often a blog helps by creating more portals for a customer to click on. Basically more landing page gateways with content targeting a number of keywords or locations.

Keep in mind that any changes you make will take 2 -3 weeks on average to see the effects. Common knowledge for SEO folk.

If you have a blog separate than the main site often the blog is better optimized it has tons of internal links, its well organized even the HTML, CSS, PHP etc.. is coded very well compared to a normal HTML website. It can be found and indexed much easier and faster especially by having just an RSS feed.

Sometimes a blog will have much better On Page SEO than most standard HTML Templates. Find out the Problem with your Maps. Fix your Citations, get your places page ranking first because its very easy. Then work on organic SEO, build some great backlinks!!

There are plenty of guys on here that package your press release. Just remember the 5 Ws of Who, what, when, why, and where from Journalism class. Try and provide them with too much information, better more than not enough. If you can write it yourself the better. They can always polish it if need be.

For instance, on my stuff. My father's friend is always giving back to his old neighborhood. He put a new set of backboards and pole with net for basketball in an old playground for his church/grade school. He asked for our help with the bucket truck to raise them up. We concreted the bases and welded the boards on the poles so they didn't vanish overnight. I took pictures and such. I can crap out a press release out of it. Evidently the Knights of Columbus were somehow involved too, so I can show two local business man give back to their old neighborhood.

I also was waiting till my seal with my HVAC number comes in to announce my new license as well as my electrical license number to show I am carrying on the business.

I am sure their is a great thread here or elsewhere on press releases for you to get ideas from and format with.

Would a theme of common exercises or mistakes people do wrong in training be the best topic to blog about? Perhaps throw it out on a tumblr for yourself maybe? I am asking the experts really here as I am not in the know, just crapping out ideas to help.

I know if I was looking to read about fitness, something that told me the common mistakes I would hit and keep me from wasting my time would be of interest.

What is an example of great backlinks? How many?

We have not blogged specifically on the keyword "personal trainer". I thought the homepage would have taken care of that. I will write a post on that as well as common mistakes.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had a feeling I should blog on the keyword. Blog has mostly been about diet and nutrition.

He trains at a local gym and trainers do appear when googled. We use the gym address even though he's not the owner of the gym, google still allowed it to be verified.

Long tail keywords in blogging should be easier to capture from what everyone told me.

You already have too many links for a local site.

The citations are killing you, how does Google know which one is the real business?

When you say you have citations, are they as similar as posible, and do you have a few, a few dozen, or a hundred plus?

Aside from the citations issue, something is amis. You should be ranking somewhere by now.

PM me the site and I will take a look.

I have built multiple citations. Bulk Citations a massive amount of citations I have never had a problem. Your creating a form on confusion when you have multiple citation with different information.

Citations will never hurt your rankings just bad information will drop you.

All citation must match the information on your Places page. Rankings will disappear even if you have INC. corp.

or corp. VS corporation. Citation must match places page information exactly!!

Don't think about backlinks or anything else. Fix this first!!! A places page is like really easy to rank. If you cant get past that part give up!! Backlinks do play a major role as far as ranking your places position.

You can have a top ranking Places page and a top ranking organic listing together. All of this is really easy.

All your citations have to be IDENTICAL. I know, believe me. I have Skyler unfucking up mine. My father and I are listed as his old INC., then just electric company, then electrical company, then Electric Co, then electrical comp, then LLC added to as well.

Virgin citation making is easy. An existing business is STD ridden with contractions, misspellings, and mistakes. I am actually listed as Champion window and siding (a National account at my address) WTF? I wish I could have sued someone over that. 20 calls a week for them at my number. I even was getting AMEX offers for them at my house preapproved.
