Does anyone l know of a site or service that will give me a free VIN report of previous owners of a vehicle? I just bought one with problems from someone who assured me there were none and my test drive did indicate any problems.

The lady did not tell me of many problem with the car that have manifested since I bought the car recently, ones that she simply had to know about

Among other things the ignition sticks and jams the starter into the flywheel after the car has warmed up, and the ECU is bad ($1400), after the car runs for 30 minutes the mileage falls to 8 mile per gallon, and pours out black smoke from the tailpipe, until it dies and you have to wait an hour for it to start.

Hoping the car history will also reveal some further information she mislead me about.

I am not above paying for the VIN check, just wondering if I can get one free.

Gonna build a new website, devoted specifically to her, trying to get all the ammo I can.

I hate getting screwed. I'm doing something similar. With you in spirit, a hot rage the rides on the wind, and burns through bone.

Have you tried seafoam? In the past it has worked wonders (seriously!) on older vehicles of mine.
Hot start problems and poor gas mileage...

If you were in Europe I can run a HPi/Equifax check for you but as you are in Texas...cant help.

99% of free VIN checkers will only give you basic info and then try to get you to pay $30 to order the full check. You will waste half a day looking for a free vin check.

Even if you pay for a full check I dont see how it will turn up the information you require

A vin check should only really show that the car has clear title, has no finance oweing on it and/or a lien from a finance company, that the car is not on an insurance register as a total loss, that the car is not on a police register as being stolen.

If I was looking for mechanical history I would be going through service records you have and ringing garages. You will probably have the supplying dealer info and they usually keep a database if the car has been serviced by them.

Sorry to hear this OP but as far as I know, well in the UK anyway there is no service that can tell
you the maintenance of the car, it can tell you insurance write off, if its on credit etc.

Maybe try and find out where the MOTs where done and ask the garages dont know if the states do MOTs)
The milleage loss and black reek, sounds like a fuel mixture problem probably causes by the ECU or if it is
running the stopping this could also be Valves and seals, If its valves and seals your looking at way more than
than the price of an ECU.

Good luck OP, hope you get some information or recompense from the previous owner

What type of car is it ?
What error Codes are you getting ?

Sea foam will not help a bad ECU.
