    Hello.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice, I've been offered the following...
    This machine for £50.

I'm not too great with the hardware side of things in IT and was wondering is this a good price and what else would be needed for the set up to get it up and working?

Any help / advice or guidance would be much appreciated, I've always wanted to have a go at getting something like this up and running. :)

I think that's quite a good price! If it fits your needs i would definitely go for it.

Well I'm into breaking hashes and such, so I was thinking I could use the power to run programs from?
He's been trying to get rid of it for quite a while, and he's asked me to make him an offer so I should be able to get it even cheaper!!

I'm afraid i have no idea if it's good for that purpose. But price wise i think you have a pretty nice homeserver there.

the big issue is that it has no hard drives and only scsi bays, 300gb are between $20 -$50 on ebay. You dont have to fill all the bays. Providing the rest of the hardware is fine , should be easy to get up and running.

If he's open to an offer see if he will throw some drives into the deal

Thanks, the guy said that it cannot be used for home use though as it is an enterprise server??

Well for those specs it's still worth paying, he's said to me that the lowest he'd take is £40, would that be a reasonable price?

Thank you I think I'm just going to go for it!! :)

Thanks for all the responses guys it's been so helpful you wouldn't imagine!

That's really good for the price you're getting it for. I'd say it's worth it.

I have worked on a few of that poweredge series. they are loud as hell, but I think you can tweak the fan speeds in the newer BIOS versions. Most of them had a couple on-board SATA ports in addition to the SCSI controller...so you could put a couple refurb SATA drives in RAID1 and have a sweet little system.

I would consider selling it, yes. ;)

    Thank you! :)

Yeah I've ordered a 76GB scsi hdd from eBay for £20 just to test it all out and see how it goes. :D
