    Hey guys,

I'm thinking about moving to Thailand in January to spend 6-12 months there. I've never been to that part of the world so any advice would be highly appreciated.

What I've found out so far is rental apartments' costs and a recommended city to live in - Pattaya. And yeah, I'm aware of what's going on there pretty much but I'm divorced now so that place could easily refresh my life :)

Any thoughts on simple things like living costs, availability of a good Internet access, ease of opening and managing bank accounts would be more than welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

Pattaya can be as cheap or expensive as you like, this really is one of the must subjective questions ever. How much do you drink/party, what sort of foods do you eat/can you survive on diet of mostly thai food? Can you drive? Is your online income enough to support yourself where you are living at the moment? Do you have enough cash tucked away in case you need to move back for whatever reason?

Not having the idea of looking for a cheap place at all. That is a well known tourist destination so I'm pretty much aware of everything you mentioned. I'd be fine supporting myself there as well tasting most of the local entertainments etc. and living on Thai food as well.

All I needed to know is how easy it is to provide yourself with a good Internet connection and also open a bank account to operate. Also, if there's some kind of a visa needed?

It's easy enough to fly under the radar if you are working online, there are so many people here who are doing it. Strictly speaking, you need a work permit, but most people only bother with that if they are trading locally. Internet is decent enough too.

Internet in south asia is pretty fast, but pings can get really high if you connect to EU or USA servers. It's also a bit unreliable - depending on provider, you might experience few hours of downtime weekly.

Pattaya is basically biggest whorehouse in the world - great place to party, but not really something you might want to live in for long time.
Personally i had huge motivation problems if you want to work from home there - there's so much possibilities of spending time, that it requires serious discipline to do actual work. Depending on which climate you come from, it might be unbearable hot for you.

VISA requirements are huge annoyance - unless you qualify for retirement visa, you'll have to leave the country every 3 months ( visa is valid 2 months, but you can extend it for another 30 days at immigration office for a fee - it's about 50$ ) - there are companies offering such travel service ( so-called "visa runs" ) and they handle all paperwork for you, but travel is still annoying.

On ending note - i'd reccomend looking around Phuket area instead - Patong town offers similar experience to Pattaya, but overall climate is much nicer ( it's penisula area, so the breeze kinda cools down the air a little ), and there's much more interesting stuff to do/see there, apart from picking up thai hookers. Prices are a bit more expensive, but region is better developed and safer.

Opening local bank account is very recommended, since about every ATM i used is charging 5$ fee for using foregin card - it quickly adds up.
