Anyone here feels funny downloading someone stuff when they get an idea or a method that made them money or changed their lives for the better? I am curious because I have gotten ideas and stuff from material that I downloaded.I know some people have made thousands from an idea they implemented, just wondering.

Maybe it is just because I'm a developer and getting older, but I very rarely download anything, even movies and music. Most "information products" are BS, so I guess I can understand people's motive for stealing there, but the fact of the matter is that if people aren't reimbursed for their time and energy, they are less likely to spend time and energy in the future. IMHO, they should be rewarded for their work.

This is especially true with musicians on independent labels, because in most cases you are taking money directly out of their pocket.

If I download something that works and actually helps me make money (such as a crack to a tool) then I will always buy it as soon as I can afford it. That way, it doesn't feel like theft and the person who has made the good tool will be rewarded and continue to create good products.

On the other hand, if it's crap, then they don't deserve to be paid, so I won't.

Interesting answers...you know I am starting to have a guilty concious and I am feeling like I should give credit where credit is do. Kinda like when an inventor creates and don't get a patent and you make the same invention and get a patent.

Side note: I think I read in an edison biography that he just patented the light but didnt actually invent the bulb.
    Regardless you get my point.

I used to never buy software, but would occasionally donate to the groups who I liked if I had some extra cash.

Now that I have plenty of money, I still get pirated software first, then after I try it if I like it I purchase it. I've spent probably $5k this year on software that I otherwise would've not paid for, but since I have the money now I have no excuse not to reward developers for their hard work.

I never buy software, being in the engineering department at my university I get everything free :D ....well except adobe products, but those i get at a sick discount...

BUT i did used to download all my software and never felt guilty, let's be honest, they are making so much off of every little update (i.e CS2--> CS3) that it's absurd

I think that those people who share products which would normally cost money are simply awful, evil individuals. I would NEVER do such a thing :pirate14: (LOL)

Most of the good products are updated all the time and if you use them a lot you will go ahead and buy them.

Do I feel bad about downloading a guru's overpriced product or a WSO that the idea was borrowed from WF

    The answer is HELL NO

I'm just waiting for someone to invent matter replicators a la Star Trek so I could pirate my gas, food and clothes as well. :prof26:

Seriously tho - for movies, games and books (read a lot of fiction, love my Sony PRS-505 ebook reader) I generally try to support the small guy with my money and just grab the rest from the net. Have to put that high speed internet to use, after all! But any good indie games for example I will buy if I find them worth the price tag (usually they are) but would I ever buy Modern Warfare 2, for example?

No way, Activision doesn't need my money, it's better that it goes to the small developers so they can keep publishing their games. It's the same with movies and books pretty much.

No guilt, but if its software, I purchase the real thing if it works. (yes I have done this)

music/movies I am not taking any money out of anyone's pocket as I would not spend money for it anyway, I just get to see it sooner than later.

Information 99% is shared after it is not as profitable anymore. If I get a good idea from it, so be it.

I try then buy, always. If it's something that 's good, I'll pay for it because I'll want updates, and further development of products, if it doesn't work, wtf ever, it goes to the trashbin anyway.

I say it's their fault for not making it freeware or just flat Open Source period. If they made it open source, then they could place up a donation button that nobody would ever click, it's pure and simple.

There's plenty of ways to make money just giving your software away. Regarding musicians and movie stars, yes, they really need that diamond lain pool and solid gold toilet installed in their 500 room house. I also look at it this way, software developers and the like that don't put their stuff out for free charge far too damn much for their BS whether it works or not.

And if I didn't pirate "The Ring" I would've be so pissed I probably would've killed people. Now I did pay to see "The International" in a good theater that had a bar and strip club in it (don't ask), after watching it, I raised hell with a manager for half an hour to get a refund for all 4 tickets. There's one thing when somethings sucks and really SUCKS, then there's another being profiteering glutens when it could be dirt cheap or free.

IMHO, make it open source, place in a donation button, problem solved. If not done, they're asking for it. Look at Microsoft, they're not hurting in the slightest from piracy.
