I have been hammering two urls with some heavy links as of late.

Since back in 2009 I have always adhered to the theory of sending links to an inner page of my sites as opposed to to the root domain as it seems to look more natural IMO in the eyes of google that an actual page on a site where an article was placed would be where all of the links were being pointed to as opposed to the root domain.

Til now this plan of attack has worked for me pretty well. However, with the 2 sites that I have been working with as of late I have been noticing some strange results.

For both sites I have been blasting links at an inner page but just today realized that google is ranking the root domains for both sites and the pages that I have been sending links to are nowhere to be found.

Has anyone noticed anything similar as of late?

The inner pages are penalized for overoptimization. Google is selecting the next-best page from your site that is not overoptimized (your homepage).

If you had done it the other way around (only linked to your homepage) and not linked to your inner pages, your inner pages would be the ones ranking now, whereas the root domain wouldn't be found.

You can control overoptimization by not using the same anchor text in all your URLs (vary it quite a bit, even a few "click here" or "this site" links will help), as well as make sure you are not keyword stuffing those inner pages. Finally, tons of low quality links with few high quality links is another thing that will overoptimize your page and push it out of the Google index.

It is a penalty, if untreated it can last for years (I've had a site that had that penalty that long). Good news is, the penalty is only page-specific and not site-wide.

Hmm, I am not so sure that's what it is too be honest. The only links I have created have been from high pr blog networks (build my rank, traffic kaboom, and hprs) and for each page I have been using 3 different anchor texts.

They haven't been anything generic as you have pointed out though, then again I never practice doing this and it hasn't been an issue.

I will give it a try and see how that works out though.

I should also note that one of the home pages doesn't even have any content at all, it just redirects to the inner page that I am trying to rank.
