I've got a forum in the pet nich that I'd like to give a little boast. Has anyone ever used PPC in this manor with good results? I'm not interested in adwords as its just too expensive.

Also, for those that have had success using PPC in this manor did you build a custom landing page to encourage new traffic to register or sent send them to the root homepage and hope for the best?

you never hope for the best. you have to track everything and test everything. no 2 campaigns are exactly the same. for some direct linking is great and for others is shit.

What sort of generic answer is that? Did you even read the OP's post?

    What a weird conversation!

I have not done this but I have similar software I need to drive traffic to and low cost PPC might be the ticket.

I would send people to a landing page first - I will post a thread in a couple days showing my pre-sell landing page which is converting in the finance niche at 21.95% - and that is for a 5 page submit.

Those are the kinds of numbers I strive for, screw that 5-6%, barely enough to eat quagmire (had to add something weird to the conversation).

    My Answer:
PPC for driving forum website subscribers seems like it might be a little expensive for any fast results.

    1. What is the goal of your forum....email lists, paid subscibers, ads??

Why not try scaping a site for email addresses...and then sending them a link to your site?

Let me know what you think of this idea?

Have done this, a very long time ago.

Wasn't very useful. It was expensive (I used Adsense). After a while, I found a better way.

My aim was to get more traffic to the website so that I could get more members (quality members, who post good content). This is simply what every forum owner wants, as content is what gives you organic traffic in the long term.

Now, as PPC didn't work out well, I got a sponsor - it was a web hosting company and my forum was related to web hosting discussions. This hosting company offered free hosting accounts in return for promotion on the forum. I would offer these free hosting plans to the members as soon as they crossed 50 or 60 quality posts and to keep their account, they had to make at least 5-10 quality posts each month. Ofcourse, you get a lot of spammers (I picked one of the new members as a Mod) but then it really worked out :)

I know this is BHW but that is blatantly illegal - CAN-SPAMM

I had a client which had a forum, and he drove traffic via PPC, and got some long term visitors, so it worked for him.

Landing page setup is a great way to boost your plans on getting organic traffic.

They help you build list, get the subscribers ready to go active on your site & let them revisit the site again.
