anybody use mutiple sites with one drupal install?

I know there is a way to manage multiple domains with one drupal install, sometimes the same database is shared, anyone doing this and is it easy to do?

Basically once I have figures out a test site, (in process) and confirm it works I am just going to scale it up, and having ONE admin panel for all sites to manage comments and such would be amazing.

A friend did this by following these instructions:

But make sure you put put the site folders in the public html and the drupal in your root folder as it isn't extrememly clear on that. You'll also have to get to know symlinks.

do you use drupal? I don't know any css, but as far as doing views and stuff I am getting pretty good, messing with fivestar and displaying that as a review type site to get people to leave comments and to also buy what ever I am trying to sell.

Do you prefer it over wordpress? because I have been really debating over learning something else, i have well over 300 hours into messing with drupal, no theming just making it do what I want.

one of my main goals is that webforms submissions are all managed in one place for all my sites and comments as well.

Yeah I use drupal, have used it for three sites now and I love it. It's so modular and there's very little you can't do with it as you've probably gathered. 300 hours is a long time to move to something else eh.

I prefer it to wordpress but I did start out with wp and moved to drupal because I needed a specific thing that wp didn't offer (dynamic subdomains) and I didn't want to get into wordpressmu which was the nearest to what I needed but wasn't up to scratch.

Have you tried Artisteer for theming? It automates a lot of it and you can also upload a psd to psd2css

what do you mean by dynamic subdomains? getting content from the main domain to go to a subdomain? or multisite like I was originally talking about?

Dynamic subdomains are automatically created when the user registers. There's a couple of modules available depending on what you want to do.

For affiliate sites where you want to put the same info on all subdomains you can use the domain access module or for subdomains where users information and personal content is included there's one called 'domain' which also has a couple of other options.

Both work well but I've only tried them on 6 :0)

have you done any of the lullabot tutorials, like the one to remake youtube? I have absolutely no formal training in website stuff and need to learn some basics, lullabot offers there 5 dvd set thing for $100+ and it goes into all sorts of stuff.

Did you just learn it all on your own as well?

The hardest part is knowing how all the modules go together, i usually just dl a crap load and see were it takes me.

Yeah I taught myself, been doing web design for 10 years or so and between studies for the last few years. It's a huge learning curve but well worth it.

I've not seen that lullabot tutorial, I'll have to check out their site.

Regarding modules, it's been hit and miss and an interesting process but I think I'm down to the minimum number to achieve my goals with my latest site. I'm still setting up admin then I can start adding content.

I'm really excited about the Drupal 7 release, the admin interface is way easier to find your way around and it has some new stuff in the core which means we won't have to install so many modules. Specifically input formats which will be a real bonus.
