Ok, I got a site, where people pay to buy something. At the moment, I have to check my site emails regularly to see if anyone's purchased anything. If they have, I have manually send them a unique referral key.
Is there any way for me to automate this, so that after payment has been taken, an email is sent out to the paypal address that the payment came from, and the email has a randomly generated referral key, and it's recorded somewhere, so that if someone says "my referral key is 123456789", I can check the database and see that it is registered and to the person in question ?

    Definitely!
Look into Paypal IPN. There are probably scripts out there that will do it for you...or you could hire someone to make one for pretty cheap.
