I know its a popular diagnosis these days, but whatever...

I always got terrible grades in school. No motivation, never did my homework. I have an above average IQ, but can be forgetful and unable to focus on details. It can make the most minor things difficult at times but then the over all "big picture" of life and work appeals to me more and I can relate to it better.

I have been self employed since 22... since I got bored at most of my jobs too quickly or... got tired of keeping up with the politics. Plus... I always saw the owners reaping all the rewards, while we got a 45 minute lunch and 2, 15 minute breaks. It never scarred me to be self sufficient and on my own. I haven't had- paid medical, paid vacations or paid sick days in 15 years. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I cant live without the freedom that being self employed provides.

I have had months where I made mid 6 figure incomes and months that I lived on credit cards. But it always seems to balance out.

It would be too kaotic for most people... and I get that. But I don't see working at Walmart or for any boss for that matter and "wasting" the one "life" I have been given. Its tuff at times, but the rewards outweigh the benefits a million to one in my opinion.

As far as ADD I have found that adderall helps. I take a small 15mg of the XR... and wow, it really gets the motivation up and helps with the focus. Being self employed and ADD is a tuff combination. You have a hundred things to do, with no "due-date" and no one telling you when to complete them. I also found a great mentor here on the forum. He got me hooked on "to-do" lists and explained he has met many (and is himself) very successful, wealthy people... And they all live by their to-do lists. It's been a great help and a lethal weapon in battling ADD and keeping focus.

Anybody here diagnosed ADD or can relate... feel free to respond or share your methods of dealing with being self sufficient or self employed.

    Tips, tricks, experiences???

How do you guys keep focused on your success and what do you do thats going to bring in a million dollars (or a high income) this year!!?

Do not easily believe you have ADD. Chances are you don't.

Get many many many different medical expert opinion before dealing with drugs. You 'll find addiction to be a very serious problem.

Yeah I have ADHD and I know what you mean. I've been self employed for a year now. Turning on music and thinking of the money in the end gets me going.

Toward the end of highschool, it was a struggle just to stay in school for 2 hours of the day. I would walk in and walk right back out and go do something else.

Be careful with the adderal man, highly addictive. I used to take painkillers for motivation and that was not a fun road to go down.

Well they used to say I have ADD but now I'm a self made IM millionaire.. It's been a struggle at times but focusing on the good things in life always motivates me to buckle down and do what needs to be done. Beautiful women, nice cars, stability in your family, a nice home, and freedom to travel keep me going no matter how distracted I get. (Believe me, if there was an ADD scale, I think I'd be at the top towards the "most severe" marker. It took a hell of a lot out of me to post this reply.. ) lol peace

I have add/adhd along with SAD ( November-February are total lost months for me) the to-do list is a good idea, I also find I tend to self medicate during the winter, then when spring comes I get a huge amount of motivation and can run off 4 hours of sleep fine. It sucks but I've found ways to make it work for me. I'm still gong to college and working part time, but im thinking more and more about becoming self employed. Last summer I was making the same amount of my retail job bi weekely paycheck every 12 hours from internet money :D

    Hey,
Just saw your post and read abt ADD.. I guess ill be needing to see a doc since this appears to be closely what I am experiencing.

I always felt I had some kind of concentration problem.. This might be it..

    Here are my issues.

1- Poor mental concentration- I have almost never been able to concentrate on what is being said in class. The max I hear is around 10-15 mins. and then my mind wanders off.

Im really good at studies though. I still have concentration issues when Im studying. I study for 10 mins and my mind starts thinking of other stuff. And then I force my mind back to studies. This keeps happening...

    2. I forget stuff damn easily... esp where i keep my stuff..

eg:If i have something in my hand, and I just kept it nearby, ill spend a long time searching for it...

    3 I get irritated easily

    4 Im very clumsy

    5 ok social skills...

6 I always imagine stories and feel happy abt it.. Like me earning lotta cash and doing this n that etc

Basically, I cant think abt any single thing for a long time.

7: I have a huge huge problem remembering ways.. I forget routes to simple places even. I cant memorize routes easily as well.. Often, when i plan to go on even a simple route, i have to think carefully.. Often I also end up going to a diff route, realise that i went the wrong way and come back!

no you dont have ADD. believe me. you DONT need to see a doc. before you know it the cunning shrink will label you a "patient" of "acute" ADD and will hook you up on medication for life. He/She will make you feel like you are on your death bed with some incurable cancer or something and you have absolutely no way out. It will make you feel miserable, full of self-pity and you will starting seeing yourself as a suffering ol' man even in your days of youth and vigor.

Just coz you have a short attention span doesnt mean anything other than that you have a short attention span. YOU should do something about it. start getting organized. lift yourselves up and make a fuckin promise to yourself to get things together. Only you can help yourself.

Dont start believing and depending on shrinks for everything. Stop labeling every little problem you have lik its some kind of terminal tumor.

If there ever was a conspiracy, the medical profession has to be it. So please dont fall prey to those mean little labels that they put on every little thing out there.

    Good call dude.

I had horrible A.D.H.D my entire life and doctors wanted to put me on meds for years. My parents never let them and I thank them for that. Just because a doctor prescribes you something doesn't mean it is okay to take it.

Pills are highly addictive and they fuck with the chemistry of your brain. They will make you worse than what you are and also, mind over matter is a bitch so they will make you think all this shit when you can deal with it on your own.

I find when I am in good shape like playing sports and such, it keeps my mind more focused and keeps me motivated.

IDK about actually having ADD...but my whole life I've been kind of a spur-of-the moment person who gets bored really easily. The only time it really messes with my IM work (yeah I'm self-employed) is when I have to do a long string of tedious work, that is really repetitive. Mentally it strains me, but also tires my physically...my answer is to blast an eclectic array of music into my headphones, and stay caffeinated. Works for me.

At least in the UK:: One of the reasons for the increase in kids diagnosed with ADHD, is that it is considered a "Disability". This is the key. Since it is a disability and not an illness, there are tremendous Tax and other benefits to having a kid with a disability in your care.

Doctors talk of parents feeding their kids all sorts of sugar products in the waiting rooms while waiting to get a diagnostic.

    lol.

Hi I'd like to point out tha the AVERAGE human loses their attention span 10 seconds out of every minute because of distraction

That being said, adderrall, ritalin, and vyvanse are all pure amphetamines, and while they might help you focus you also won't be doing much sleeping or eating, which really catchs up to you in the long run and can actually make you go literally "psycho"

    just my 2 cents

ADD medications may or may not have side effects. But living with ADD is as tough as it can get. Only 2 or 3 out of a 100 ADDer manage to live happily- rest are just lost in confusion, frustration and trying to play catch-up. Life is always one-step ahead of them. ADD awareness needs to grow a lot more, especially in India where I have been consulting one doctor after another but no one seems to have a clue.
