I'm looking to move my website to the top of search engines to increase customer traffic. What strategies should I research? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    -Thanks,
    Rich

Use search. One of the first things you'll want to do is get some backlinks. Spend like 5 minutes in the White Hat SEO section of the site and you wouldn't have posted this.

There are ALOT of things you could do.

    Just search.
A good alright way thing you could do is to maybe have a squiddo lens, start buying articles relevent to your niche and let those search engines crawl.
Use long-tailed keywords, buy some keywords "Not at google at the beginning" and just keep at it. Put like 3+ articles a day and slowly your site will gain ranks.

Then, after a few weeks, buy Xrumer (Or hire someone on the forums) and get it blasted into .edu sites and other sites (Get a trusted guy)
That should be enough to start you off.
Finally, post some articles to those article directories and stuff, making sure you place a link back to your site.

Also, a good designed webpage will keep people coming back for more.
But if you want to get to the top a tad bit easier, buy a URL with at least PR4 or something.
