I'm doing my first white hat site/business in several years, so this is kinda new to me lol.
Are any of you guys using free directories for links? I know google doesn't like it, but I was thinking about doing just a few. Dmoz of course. I'm just trying to get a few links from a variety of sources without looking spammy, but getting a little bit of a boost.

Go ahead if it's just DMOZ. Avoid the free spammy directories.

    Hey Jon,

    I use these 4: dir.yahoo.com, dmoz.org, joeant.com, & infomine (ucr.edu).

As SEO Power said, avoid the spammy directories. Use the same login name & description of the site across these 4 directories, so Google knows it's you doing it.

    Hope that helps.

Directories aren't good anymore, I think there are only 2 left that will actually help boost your rank, dmoz (impossible to get into), and yahoo directory (expensive).

Interesting to know that directory sites are not considered as crucial as they were.

Yea I would just manually submit to a couple of the directories above.

Now if you are trying rank for local, that's different.

It's not worth the time and money honestly. If you can get a high PR one for free, go ahead. Directories just don't count for crap anymore.

It's certainly not as much of a focus as it used to be for me. I always submit to DMOZ and normally get included within a few months which certainly helps. All the other ones aren't much use anymore.

Submit to only a few top directories, and focus on PBN links. Good luck.

Submitting to directories won't do you harm, but it might not be that useful either. I suggest submitting to Web 2.0 sites and authoritative sites in your niche. You can try Dmoz but they are not as useful and popular as before.

Thanks for the directory suggestions. It hadn't even crossed my mind to submit to directories anymore. I remember submitting my first GeoCities websites to the Yahoo directory back in the mid '90s haha. I might as well try and submit some stuff to dmoz for the hell of it.

Back in the 90s I would make a site over the weekend, pay the $299 to get in Yahoo and it would make $1000/month from there on out. Yahoo was #1 back then. Man, I'm kicking myself for not making new sites daily!

Yes, you can still submit to top quality directories but don't use any keywords. Just use brand or raw urls to get the links. This will works well in the long run :)

Good quality directories that could potentially drive direct traffic to your websites would be good.

I still do submit but all is filtered according to their TF/PR/DA and site layout. Avoid those that use the same template as others... And i use the website name as anchor text. :)
