    Hi,

I am looking for a way to effectively monetize my website, it is a web based you tube download and convert script that I brought and installed.

Buying this script I think was my first mistake, I failed to accurately gauge the ad sense potential for keywords associated to my site.

Nether the less it now has a lot of back links and I don't really want to give up on it just yet, so iIam here looking for suggestions on monetization options I might have.
unfortunately the traffic is from all over the shop and obviously not very targeted, and the traffic is there to download.. not buy. grrr

Maybe I could force the user to perform an action before the download is allowed to make $, this is probably bad practice?

    Thanks

    Chris

I assume that downloading and converting are two different features. You can allow users to download videos for free, but for conversion use some content gateway. Users have to fill some random surveys before accessing the conversion feature. This works well if you have high traffic.

    Hey,

Cheers for your response, yea it kinda works like that, the user first selects the youtube url for download and the file format to convert too, then the file is downloaded to the web server where it is converted. The user can then download the file from there.

This is just what I was thinking, where a user has to fill out a form before they can download the converted file. I guess it will have a negative effect on usability but its definitive something I want to try to implement.

I have also seen some of these forms in action but never knew who the service provider for them was, I am a little bit wary of them as I don't want a stupid form that takes 15 minutes to complete that would be no good.
Or a form that is persistent in the sense that it is there and can not remember a returning visitor.

    Cheers

    Chris

I think a one or two field form is the only way to go here. Anything longer and users will start to feel like they should just abandon the process and go to one of the other hundreds of youtube downloader sites that don't require CPA instead.

Yea I agree. Maybe like an email CPA offer. You might be able to get one for like .20cents an email(idk?). Which could work out great since these people obviously want the video, exchanging their email won't be a problem.

Set up geotargeting and serve a bunch of text links for fairly generic free CPA email submits (gift cards etc) for the surfer's country right next to the URL form.

Advertise encoding software eg. sothink, divx, tmpgenc.

If you google for "tube downloader affiliate program" there are several pay per install or pay per sale programs including Youtube Robot.

You might even get some Netflix signups.

Remember that you don't really want return traffic that's going to chew up your bandwidth - you want to get them to click on an ad straight away.

Sorry, kind of a dumb noob question.. What exactly do you mean? I always get confused with all the bandwidth talk... what do you mean by "return traffic", and how do they take up any more bandwidth then what they already was?

    Thanks!

Normally with a regular webpage, you are serving up a few KB of html / text data plus a few images - with the hosting costs of today, it's negligible. With a youtube downloading site, since you're downloading the vids to your server on the surfer's behalf, you're using a ton more bandwidth. Most youtube videos are 4MB+ so you're going to probably average several MB per visitor instead of a few KB. If the surfer wants to download a 4MB vid, you download it to your server (4MB) and then the surfer downloads it from your server (another 4MB, for a total of 8MB+ for that surfer). Some HD youtube vids are hundreds of MB. Your bandwidth expense is going to go way up.

By return traffic I mean return visitors who keep coming back to your site to download more vids. They will suck up tons of your bandwidth which you have to pay for and they won't make you any money. So you want to make them click on an ad, which will potentially make you some money, as soon as possible. Preferably you want them clicking on lots of ads and getting distracted from their original goal of downloading videos on your bandwidth.

Thankyou for your top tip's, I have started looking into content gateway / locker service providers, I found a list on BHW and there is too much choice lol.

Yea the bandwidth is what costs, I started the website on a cheap ffmpeg host provider and with growth reached my bandwith limit in the first month. ouch

And naturally the bandwidth I require increases in size and cost with each new non paying customer :)

So unless I effectively monetize, the website shall fall as its costing more than its paying.

Maybe I should try a huge donate button. yea right.

Anyway thank you for your suggestions.
