    Hi,

My son is a very good poet and I am looking for a way for him to turn his talent into money. Looking for ideas not really based on the usual adsense or youtube.

    Thanks for any replies.

It depends how good he is.

    There's a big difference between:

Do not go gentle into that good night
Rage, rage against the dying of the light

    and

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall

If he is more the former, he's clearly going to have more joy, although sadly, poetry isn't a very lucrative profession for most people.

If he's a good poet though, that talent can be used in other areas. I used to write a lot of poetry and several times had offers for some of it to be published, which I declined. That was because I wrote for myself and only liked letting people I knew read it (maybe there was some fear involved too if I am honest).

The reason I mention that, is because being able to illicit an emotional response from someone through poetry is a skill I have called on for many years when writing sales copy - because good sales copy does the same thing... it gets an emotional response.

And writing good sales copy is lucrative.

You had a thread a while ago where you said you had hired a closer - on the sales side, do you have websites, or get involved in email marketing? If so, could your son turn his hand to writing sales copy for you? I know that's not making money directly from poetry, but practising one helps with the other (I know that from experience) and earns him some more whilst doing it.

For pure poetry though, I think he just needs to get his work out there, get it noticed, network and also keep his fingers crossed. A blog could be a good start.

Also, a lot of poets turn their hand to writing lyrics for musicians and the good ones earn a very decent living - it's a competitive space though. If he wanted to go down that route I'd suggest finding unknown bands who are just starting out as they'd be more likely to collaborate with a newcomer.

Do you have an example of his work you could show us?

Many thanks for the reply appreciated. I am putting a website for him at the moment and perhaps when up I can post a link here. Regarding an old posting of mine, to be honest his talent lies in writing poetry and writing sales copy would be out of the question.

Thanks again for taking the time and trouble to reply.

    Kind regards
