Free no but I'd recommend Sony Vegas Movie Studio it's cheap fairly easy to use (does have learning curve) and does the job. I've been using it for a year and love it does everything I need.

Best free? Not sure. But I tried the AVS4YOU dot com video editor. Free, except it has watermark applied to free version saves. However, after trying it a couple years ago, I registered for lifetime access. What's cool is they have a suite of about 18 programs: audio, video, photo and more editors, converters, movie players, DVD and CD creators/converters, etc. All of the 18 licenses included for your use if you register just one of their programs, this includes free upgrades and new applications that come out.

They usually have a special price, 70% off, like now, through about first week of January, listed under the register section.
I registered for lifetime use, during special offer, for about $49, I believe it was... and they have special offer yearly renewable subscriptions for about $39. Been pleased with the many useful tools they have that are available to me for lifetime. Lots free upgrades since I registered too. Also lotsa video tutorials there.

Anyway, downloads are free to try, unlimited except for watermarks until you register. But there is probably a way to get around the watermarks too. lol

If it is just a temporary project try the trial of Premiere Elements. I own Premier elements and also the AVS suite mentioned above. Big fan of both and for quick edits I'll use AVS.
