I think, for keyword competition check Google keyword tool are best.

That shows the Adwords competition, not the SERPs competition.

I ditto frazgta, market samurai is a good tool [not so good as before though]. Try traffic Travis also as they both have free versions.
I prefer using adwords keyword tool to augment market samurai and traffic travis when doing research. Hell one can even use the google search engine + SEO quake plug-in. Hope this helps!

Anyways, Market Samurai will be your best help if you want a free tool. Once you're willing to actually commit to SEO and working online, maybe you should invest in a couple tools.
