I'm wondering if there are any SEO benefits in buying 10, 15 year old domain that has no backlinks or does not seem to have been used at all compared to a fresh domain that has never been registered?

    Any advice in this area?

Has it never been dropped in the past 10-15 years?

I'm not sure. I'm just looking at twelve dollar domains available on godaddy expiring auctions and some of them are quite old, but have no pr, backlinks or anything. Just wondering if I should pick those VS something fresh. Not sure how I would be able to check if they had been previously dropped.

It's not the aged domain that google likes, it's the aged backlinks as they show the domain is established. If there are no links, then from my experience, the aged domain offers negligible benefit (SEO wise) compared to a new domain. A new domain however offers you the freedom of picking the name.

Go for aged domain with some backlinks, domain with even links from 10-15 referring domains is fine.

I would say go for it only if it has a brandable name you could potentially use as a money site.

The reason people use expired domains is because of the aged links that it has.

Google recognises it as a old site with establishment and authority, hence it will be easier for you to start with your SEO efforts. Recently it is taking longer to rank totally new sites, much longer that what it took before.

So getting a aged domain with links might be a good idea if its a name you think you can use as a money site. For PBN I wouldn't bother with the name.

SO if there are NO backlinks to the domain, say it was just registered but never used and the name is not too bad so it;s brandable, there is a SEO benefit in buying the old one?

Check its history and see how many times was it dropped. If it has been dropped several times, you can forget about it.

If you are not sure about the number of times the old domain was dropped, then you should go for the new domain.

If domains have no backlinks then I don't think there is any point to buy. No difference if its old or new - specifically when there is no backlink profile.

The only reason you would buy the old domain in this case is if it was a rare name or one that will work well for your website.
