I can't believe I put all this work into writing good articles for clients and they won't even include my name in the articles to give me credit for them or let me include them in my portfolio, what the heck. Is this standard? Are they afraid the clients will come to me instead so their outsourcing scheme will no longer give them easy money? I know what my writing is worth, and I'm not going to accept not being credited for it anymore.

Edit: Please read my last post on page 2 to clarify things.

It depends. Most content outsourcers do so on the preconceived notion that the articles are being "ghostwritten", i.e. are going to seem like the site creator is the one who wrote them. Did you make it clear that you wanted attribution in the article when you agreed to the terms?

So you offer a writing service and get paid, then want credit as well? Maybe just write for yourself

I understand that as a writer, I deserve credit for my work. I will definitely be asking for credit prior to writing any articles from now on. I just worked really hard for a client and then accepted three more articles from them at such a low rate that after taxes it's not even grocery money. It's just about impossible to build my portfolio without getting credit. It means I'll have to keep accepting the same low pay because no one knows what I actually do. About to say screw it and not even finish these articles for this client.

If your contract with them stated that you would get credit or allow them in your portfolio then the buyer should give you credit and allow you to use them in your portfolio.

If your contract does not say that then he does not have to give you credit and you can't use them in your portfolio.

    What does your contract say?

I figured getting credit for my work would be a trade off for accepting low-paying work. Maybe the business is afraid of losing low-paying workers who finally get acknowledged for their work. I think I'll contact companies directly and ask for more pay.

so they pay you and you want also credit? i think this shouldn't be mandatory, than do it for free and just ask for credit from your clients :)

Pleased to say I won't ever be dealing with you with an attitude like this. Very poor to even suggest this.

When I pay for content I buy it on the proviso that all rights pass to me, it is never shared elsewhere nor used in any portfolio, so I am buying it outright.

There's not even a contract. They just send me work when it's available. If I didn't have so much free time and wasn't bored all the time, I wouldn't have accepted it. But still, I take the time to be creative and not just re-write articles and don't get any credit for it. Not doing anymore work for this particular client.

How am I supposed to build my portfolio if I can't even say what I do? "I wrote some articles for some company in Timbuktoo, but I can't actually send you what I wrote. The articles are on a top-level website, but again, I can't say where. Oh ok, I can accept $1 per article since I can't show you what I've already accomplished."

Just sign your name at the end of all these useless posts and call it your portfolio

    Yes there is a contract.

It might not be a formal 19 page one but you and the buyer made a deal.

I've never given any of my writers those provisions myself but perhaps he did.

Did that deal say you get attribution and are permitted to use the content in your portfolio?

No, I am not allowed to use the content in my portfolio, that was specifically stated.

Then turn down the client before doing any work if that is not acceptable to you.

What I would do if I were an aspiring writer is build a portfolio on my own site.

Take 10 niches, write 10 quality articles, one for each niche and there is your portfolio.

Then you control the content as it is your own and can point anyone to it at any time.

Should the cost of a domain and hosting be an issue, use a free site like
    Code:
    https://wordpress.com/pricing/
and you can have as many sites as you want and be able to use them for your portfolio.

The other benefit is if the client's site goes down you don't lose your ability to share your quality content.

Oh well, looks like I made some people on here mad or whatever. It's not like I can afford to do anything else but take low-paying work at this point.
No, they didn't tell me about this until I asked. I didn't know you weren't allowed to get credit for your work. I write for a local newspaper and my name appears on every article I write, and it's contract work. I guess different people have different ways of doing things, though.

It is actually unusual for someone to give credit when they are using a writer for their sites. I'm pretty sure I've never seen it on a "regular" site.
