I have significantly higher approval rate for blog comments that have names instead of anchor text.

So, i stopped using anchor text to create backlinks for backlinks. Is it a good move or not?

    What is yoru vote>
    - more backlinks with no anchor, or less backlinks with anchor?

A backlink with a name beats no backlink.

An optimised backlink beats a banklink with a name.

Something to think about - who is autoaccepting your comments?

definitely a good and common move used to carry juice to your 1st tier of backlinks.
i dont know if make difference but this is what i think and make sense: if the anchors points to an article have similar keywords it makes more natural than having a lot of names (which are not keywords and are not related between) ... if google cares about this i really dont know.
