Anchor text and SERPs

    If I have the anchor text "cheap white footballs" for example. Will that help my ranking for "white footballs" as well?

    it depends on the competition as always..if the comp is mid/high you should use the exact anchor as well.

    Yes, but in my opinion, just a little bit. Not enough to try and take advantage of both keywords.
    It may be a good idea to target cheap white footballs first, and once that's at the top, focus on white footballs, which should have a head start.

    It's good practice to mix up the keywords too...

    I'd use the main keyword for 80% of my links, and mix up the rest..something like

    white footballs 80%
    Cheap footballs 5%
    Cheap white footballs 5%
    W ww.cheapfootballs.c0m 5%

    Then add a load of manual random ones too - G will see a really natural link profile.

    I agree with Jon though - choose the easiest keyword first the you'll see some return sooner.

    Yeah, I agree with Jon. Well said. Target the "cheap white footballs" first, then you can focus on "white footballs" a bit later (as it will be more difficult to rank).
