Here goes my long winded story, I will try to keep it short but most likely fail at doing so, it might be wise to grab a cup of coffee or maybe print this out for some "on the crapper" reading. :)

For me it all started out a a hobby back in 1996, I was enthralled by the "darker side" of the online world. I was a poor/young computer salesman making $7 an hour + commission (which didn't amount to much) as the store wasnt that busy nor sucessful. Since i wasn't busy, I was at work with a computer and alot of free time, I started a small web site on a free host and reviewed "underground sites" I came across and ranked them 1-100. I'd email the web site owner, let them know i linked their web site along with a rank (just my own personal opinion) and asked for a link back.

Within about 2 weeks i was getting and decent amount of traffic, the free host wasn't cutting it anymore. I was having fun and didn't want to loose my hobby so I found a cheap hosting company that I could afford on my $7 an hour salary. Anyway through this process I was making some good contacts with these other web site owners and just start chatting, when one day a guy asked my (Andy - From the Netherlands, ran a warez site) asked me how I was making money? I replied "Making money?, I do this for fun." I followed his advice put up a single banner ad. I was amazed that within 24 hrs I made like $5. Granted that wasn't then or now alot of money but I was fine with paying $15 a month just to have this "hobby". So now it was gonna pay for itself and then some. It also did something else, it motived the hell outta me. I was emailing more people, updating my page 2 times a day. And within 2 weeks I was making $10 a day, within a Month $25 a day, 6 weeks $50 a day, 2 months $100 a day. I was making more than my job, while still make the $7hr from it,because i could do my web site form work. After 6 months i finally quit my job because i was making about $3000 a month and frankly the $7 an hour wasnt worth my time it took to drive in everyday.

By this time i was overwhelmed keeping up with the work and implemented a cgi/c coded topsite script from Splitinfinity,my 1st real investment think it cost me $900. I ended up hosting with them as well. After that my site exploded, I was doing 30-50,000 uniques a day. My income nearly doubled. And I was forced into my 1st dedicated server, because i was eating resources like mad.

Then one day i was emailed by a man named Tom he was with a new company called Xpics and was wondering if I would run their ads in place of my old ones. Most of my ads were adult since they were the only ones that didn't frown upon the sites i was linking to. Well, immediately I jumped from $5000 to $7500 with the same traffic, this is the point where my blackhat day began. Xpics pretty much hooked me up with most of thier tricks, Tom and Brian (he was one of the owners) were phenomenal to me. I was doing pop ups, backbuttons, exit pops, pop unders. (Keep in mind, NO one was doing this, in fact I did get in a little trouble because I did a couple things they showed me before they even had a chance to implement them.) At this point i was making $15-18k a month with my one web site. If i were to go into all the tricks and ideas i did with pop up, most of you wouldn't belive me that it was me that did it 1st, or 2nd. But 3 years after I started this little web site, I had 3 main websites , 2 dedicated servers, $6000 a mo bandwidth bill and was grossing over $40,000 a month by 2000. By then the F.T.C had shut down Xpics, but i was selling my exit traffic for 1 penny, no bad considering i had roughly 150k uniques a day. But then.....

The internet bubble burst, Xpics was gone.
I was burned out from working 15 hours a day, everyday even Xmas for the last 3 years. Finding people to buy traffic was really hard, the company who was buying my exit traffic couldnt sustain that money because they were way overpaying for it. Internet stocks were in a free fall. (Unfortunaly this is were I had ALOT of my money) At that point I was done, I quit the net cold turkey and went back into the real world with what I had left over financially, which was a decent amount but the market crash hit me VERY hard and I lost a huge chunk. Anyway that a story I dont wish to talk about its still painful.

See I told you I couldn't keep this short!
I've dabbled in the last year or 2 in a few things, like blog and ping,rss2blog etc, but got in too late and never made anything that kept me interested.
But now I'm back, I'm an old dog and my old tricks are no longer good. But I am an innovator I love taking ideas tweaking them, improving upon them. I really feel I am excellent in doing that, I feel I have proven I can do that.
I'm an innovator and a marketer. I been lurking around here as a guest for awhile, with you guys just tempting me with all your ideas. Few days back I finally registered and contacted a fellow member whom is going to take me under his wing and try to teach this old dog some new tricks. Because what I did learn is you cannot do this alone, you need a group of good people surrounding you.

For that I would like to give a small thanks to Tjlight my mentor, in my re-birth of Internet ventures.

P.S Longest Intro post ever? Beleive it or not this is the short version! :)

    Wow, Jaz,

Great story. I have almost the same story as you. I started in 1996, with a simple adult web guide directory. I was trying to copy Persian Kitty. I use to email all webmasters for link exchange. It later grew to 8 topsites and hosting from Splitinfinity as well. I was one of Chris's first hosting customers. At one point I had about 70K uniques a day. I remember, shitting my pants when Xpics was shut down. Do you remember the 22 cents per click they had? It was the easiest money I ever made. I later went on to circle jerk sites (RB4 script/UCJ) and made a pretty good amount of money. Then it seemed I couldn't convert traffic anymore. I knew a lot of old time black hat stuff but either I lost my touch or it stopped working. I was obsessed with my business and then I just burned out. Recently I decide to get back in and by coincidence stumbled upon this site and now feeling like an old guy trying to learn all over again. Seems to be a lot of talented people around here. Let's help each other and exchange some war stories. It's wild that we have almost the same history. I must say, I am getting addicted to this site and addicted to the biz again. I haven't contributed yet because there is great stuff here. I don't know if what I know still applies. So I guess I will just sit back and learn from the new generation.

Take Care and keep in touch.

Look forward to hearing more from you. I don't have adult sites but I would sure like to learn some of the tricks you guys use. I'm sure we will all learn a lot from your experience. Just shows that "noob" status may only be relevant to when you joined the forum, not what you know or can contribute.

AWG123: Yep, I can relate to you 100%. Looking forward to talking to you in the future.

My advice to people starting out, contacts, make contacts, make friends. Its more about who you know not what you know.
Don't get too greedy, don't bite the hand that feeds you.

It really boils down to networking with the right people, hard work, dedication and not forgetting how you go to where you are at.
I'm more than willing to offer what I can however, I'm starting all over myself, I'm a noob all over again with past experience. Which puts me about 2 feet in front of a total noob. My tricks are outdated, my old contacts lost through the years. Im here to learn for you new guys and make new contacts.

The advantage I have this time around is my past mistakes and knowing that yes it is possible to suceed.

I'm here to learn from those willing to teach, and then willing to teach those willing to learn. Simple as that.

    Hey Jaz,

We seem to be the old timers here. I want to give you my new perspective on the new Web 2.0. You are absolutely correct. Everything was networking and ICQ. Man , My business grew in direct proportion to how many contacts I had on IcQ. Once my system was set up, all I did was keep in contact with all the major porn TGP's. It was cool. Since we are both in the same place now, with starting over, I must say in some ways it is easier today, but in other ways there is so much more bullshit around. All these guru's pitching their product launches, all these dumb ass sales letters, everyone trying to pretend they are an expert. I see some of these online money blogs that are making money with content that bores me so bad it makes me want to gag. People who don't have two dimes to rub together pitching their horse shit system. Check out the top subscribed users on youtube. Most of them absolutely suck.
As I am looking to get back in, I want to concentrate on non porn sites because, I kind of been there done that. But the more I research, I have to laugh because I am coming to the conclusion that Porn is more pure than mainstream. There is so much empty calories with the Gurus, Product launches, Main Street mumbo jumbo. At least with porn there is no bullshit. You like ass you get ass, you like mature you get mature. Converting was easier. You don't need ad copy, you just need to test the talent. I am glad I came here to BHW. The bullshit gets eliminated quick. Getting back into web biz has been very interesting for me. I have really researched a lot and have more to go. BHW, has been very helpful. I just wanted to get your thoughts on how your re-entry has turned out. M
