I always think about how your internet presence (in my case, Facebook, LinkedIn, twitter etc) is so separated from your real life, physical presence.

so I was thinking it would be great to have a phone app that links the two together - so you sign up and the app tracks you via gps, and overlays you on a map, along with anyone else in the area that is using the app.

you can then decide how much or how little you want to be displayed - anonymous, just your name, your social nicks, etc.

you can see everyone around you on the map, and however much or little info they have chosen to publish, and you can see also a list of people near you that you know - or have an indirect connection to (like how LinkedIn connections work).

Just wondering what people think about the idea- I know there are lots of similar apps, but I don't know if there is anything that works in exactly the same way as that? If there is, I want to find out about it...

This sounds like it would be a useful tool for smartphone thieves.

I couldn't see an app like this being useful to me, how would you see it being useful to yourself?

Fair point, but with this app they would know when exactly you'd be passing their shady alley.

This would be a great app for stalkers, when will it be available?

Really? You should get one ! :)

Hmm, that's true, but you would also be able to track the thief who would have to be using the app to start with.

Anyway, I know there are privacy issues, and so on, but I think it would have lots of advantages as well.

How would this kind of app be useful to you personally? What would you use it for?

Find my friends when I was out. Find anyone I know.
let people find out about me.

it would be good for dating - easier to meet single people when you are out.

good way to find out about someone if you meet or see someone interesting...

Yes, I just looked that up.
Of course there are loads of dating apps - POF for example. and they all do a similar thing.
But what about when you out in a bar, and you want to find some single people who are in the same place - my idea would be good for that. I know it sounds a bit sad - but the reality is that loads of people still sit on their phones while they are out anyway. I think it would be a good concept to bridge the gap between virtual and reality.

It sounds like a fantastic dating tool for introverts! Being able to ask a single girl in the same bar if you can buy her a drink through your phone, the ultimate shy person's ice-breaker!

I'd imagine there would definitely be a market for this but I'm not sure if there's already a similar app.

Privacy is over rated. Besides, you can always remain anonymous, or not use it.

i can definitely invisage a future where the real and digital world are connected. And a step on from that as well where everyone has a "cookie" so you can have personalised experiences in real life like you do online

cookies now are a good example of the privacy argument - yes, they are infringing on privacy, and not so long ago that was massively over hyped, but think what the web would be like without them.
