A lot of online games, especially for valve games, servers are set up privately. Most of these servers charge for admin on a monthly basis... What I was thinking was, you get a server and charge the people a certain amount of money for admin to cover cost, then you could charge various other things for different "perks".

Once one server is turning a profit you could multiply. Say you could make a server that is making $30 net profit. Well you could multiply that by as many times as you want across as many games as you want. I haven't done this, I think I will give it a shot, but I figure you if you spread it out across enough servers you could be making a couple grand a month...

What do you guys think?

I dabbled in game server hosting a while back and ran far, far away from it in the end.
If the servers are not ping perfect, people will moan.
If you have 10 minutes downtime, people will moan.
You get the picture.

More support calls than normal hosting and is a cut throat business - the profit you make on a server is minimal, so 30 times minimal is a little bit.

Not trying to put you off, if you think you have a market that is ready to buy go for your life but don't expect a lot of money and definately do not expect to just rake the money - support on game servers is a chore!

"Charge money for admin to cover cost " - what do you mean by this ? you charge them money for having admin rights ? if you charge them money to play, they'll just look for another server.

It depends on the game being popular in the neighborhood area to attract local players to your server, else everyone will probably lag. What you could do is keep ranking of the players and offer a pro mouse/pad for the #1 winner at the end of the month or even the week.

It is doable, yes.

edit: yes CS servers are insanely numerous but if you advertise it a little in the beginning and offer awards for players you'll be more than likely to have it full all the time. Plus, you'll have players going to the server's website to see their ranking. Are you telling me they won't fill out xbox cpa's ? :D

Not a bad idea if you know how to market your game server to the masses...if you have some money to make the investment it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to get off the ground. Worst case scenario you loose a little money and have to shut the server down...
