    Hey everyone,
So this is a pretty unique situation I find myself in at the moment. I plan on moving to Phnom Penh Cambodia for a year and would like any ideas you guys might have for monitizing this descision. I know there are some pretty unique things I could offer up as an american living in cambodia (online or offline). Some Ideas I have come up with so far are...

    • Regular IM methods (CPA, Affiliate, Adsense, blah blah blah)
    • Manage a team of VAs offering SEO/IM services
    • Give tours of Phnom Penh to western guests
    • Day job cooking at a western style resturaunt
    • Ebay sales of local one of a kind stuff

I know there are more creative things I could be doing with this opertunity so I put it to you, the creative genious mind of BHW, to think about how you would make money in Cambodia. I'm open to basically all ideas as long as it doesnt break ANY laws, Cambodian Prison is crazy.

There are some limitations to keep in mind though such as...
    • primitive internet connection at a premium price. Descent internet can cost as much as $250/month in cambodia so it looks like I'll be limited to a 1mb/s connection and a VPS with all of my IM tools on it that I acces through an RDP (about $100/month total).
    • I will be obtaining a business class visa for this move which alows me to legaly operate within the country as any local would (pay taxes, hire employees, lease property, etc etc).
    • I'll be taking language classes when I get there but for the first 6 months or so I'll most likely have a pretty hard time comminicating effectivly on a professional level with khmer only speakers.
    • While online methods are always welcome I think theres not to much I would do differant from Phnom Penh to The USA, offline methods however I bet we could get real creative with.

So... How would you make money in cambodia?

Now thats using your noodle! Do you think I should tell them its an apocalypse now tour or just let them figgure it out about half way up the meekong? lol

Every country in the world has its skeletons in the closed (no pun intended) and I think it really goes to show the overal ignorance of western culture as a whole that Pol Pot is the only thing anyone can come up with when they hear the word Cambodia.

With all due respect I doubt it was cambodias reputaion for being the safest place in the world that caught my eye to begin with. I sincerly appreciate the heads up but I know how to avoid a scam and dodge a brick. My biggest concern is money right now and would love your input on that as your obviously well traveled in the area.

Also I see GoldenGloves stopped by, I would love to hear what he has to say as I know he has roots in that corner of the world too.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm also going to be in Chiang Mai for 2 or 3 months before I get to PP.
Ive been looking into the idea of building Ebook and video guides for each city i go to as well but the A/V equipment is a little pricy to be adding to the cost of getting to SEAsia in the 1st place.

Now back to the topic at hand...

As you have stated you are going to Chiang Mai first end of story, no need to say anymore you will not want to leave Chiang Mai, as you will have ditched all your plans of going to PP after a few weeks in CM...

Offline methods would be better given that you're only there for 1 year.

    #Ebay sales of local one of a kind stuff - Add to this idea;

Cambodia's garment and footwear exports are pretty good and growing fast (Main exports to US, UK and EU countries). If you can find some direct manufacturing contacts and build a good relationship with them, you might be able to get good prices for wholesale orders. Maybe try out selling a few of their items on eBay to test the waters. I know people who do this, the hard part is to find the contact. Hope this helps!

While your Idea isn't exactly original, and there are plenty of message boards on Cambodia you could monitize things if you really socialised. Create something unique, bussiness contacts, trusted travel guides, detailed laws about property and relocating, hotel reviews, a little language help. A real complete one stop shop website doesn't really exist as far as I know and could probably make a little money. Good luck, make sure to put alot of photos on the site.

There is no way Cambodians would let you take a pontential job of theirs, you would need to appy for working visa, plus a working pemit first then get around that hurdle, as THEY are the tour guides, even if they are not, they would do anything for a buck, I've been to Phom Phen before, are you sure you can last a year there? I couldn't even stay a week, theres nothing there. I've stayed in Bangkok for a while and loved it.

The only way you could stay there making money, is working in the privacy of your own room with a decent internet connection and working hard on IM.

You've really haven't researched anything have you? cooking? lol, firstly even if you even get a job as a cook, which wont happen as I said before, Cambodians wouldn't let a foreigner take a pontential job that they could be in, just say hypothetically you did get one, could you really survive on a dollar a day?

These are good ideas, I'll be looking into the logistics of them for sure.

@ steelballs I would love to agree with you, my only issue with staying in chiang mai long term is the visa (60 days with 30 day extension, as I'm sure you know). I dont have the extra $1,000 bucks for language classes and an ED visa right now and Cambodia hands out 12 month business visas like candy from what I understand. I figgured I would live in PP and travel to BKK and CM regularly and probly head up to Laos here and there too.

after living 15 yrs in thailand , and visiting laos / cambodia on visa runs i would say both countried have there let downs.

this site is owned by an american , he makes $2000+ a month from it ... http://www.livingthai.org/ no it is not my site ....

in my opinion thailand is the better place then camb. but the visa ruling and the face u cant own land or property unless u have a thai partner which they own 51% of ANYTHING you buy. unless u open a company and out of the 51% thai owned u divide it by 7 thais , and on the contracts u state u can change there share to any other thai immediately .... this way if they gang up on u , u find other thais to take there place, there costs will out weigh there fight against you. this way u emply thais to work u dont have too.

the sever idea is a good one ....

    @ Ying Yang
That solution for the 51% issue is brilliant, thanks for that bro!
Let me ask, how are you getting around the new visa laws, I presume your not making runs out of the country every 2 weeks right? ED, Wife, Air travel? Just curious as Thailand was my 1st choice but Cambodia won the pick due to its visa laws and level of freedom/lawlessness, I don't need to see the inside of a Thai prison for burning a little grass after work you know.

    @blacky
Bigger ROI on opium i think lol

i'm an expat, never been to asia but have lived in many countries. the first thing i usually do is create an expat facebook community fanpage for the particular city where i'm staying. there is competition but i've had great success using facebook as opposed to a tld. i advertise it on every local expat forum. then, i advertise a poker tournament, wow, sometimes had six tables full - take 15% - and, in general everyone (except for me) is an english teacher living off 500 u.s. per month. these ARE your list, expats ARE the best list. i don't know anything about the expat scene in cambodia though.

Cocaine not made in Cambodia or anywhere near Asia, you would need to bring it in from South America.
