Guys, this is good news for me personally. Don't know what it means to you all.

    Just read it here:

    And also checked the site:

Great news OP. Currently it is listing books and movie cd's only though.
Previously India had some other program launched by amazon itself called Junglee.

Once it has started, the other sections will come up soon. Remember, India is a huge market and has cash-in-hand population for those products. It was high-time the world's largest online retailer, Amazon, opened their dedicated shop here. Now they have opened, they should fill all departments with products, not just books. At the same time, I hope they don't kill the existing local offline markets.

    The biggest problem with this.
Shipping. Mind blowing wait times will be in effect for sure. Good Luck waiting 10 days for your battery charger LOL.
No offence but without a proper infrastructure ecommerce wont thrive.
The government has to invest a lot into making better systems for transportation.
Then only will ecommerce thrive in countries like Bangladesh,India,Pakistan, etc.

Once it has lot more products, it will have to begin an aff program. Remember, Amazon gets free online exposure and advertisement 24x7x365, because it has millions of affiliates displaying its products and services, and these affiliates are also creating new niche markets for specific Am-products without Amazon needing to spend billions on special promotional activities.

This powerful marketing strategy has worked for them in US, Europe, and elsewhere. So, I guess they will have a affiliate wing soon for their .in site.

That infrastructure already exists. See ebay.in's success... that success depends on and is made possible by a (comparatively) good Indian courier system. You got to acknowledge that it is a fact... With Amazon in India now, that system will become better by the day. (Hopefully! lol)

    P.S.:
I usually buy things from ebay.in, and get those things inside 4 days most of the time. That's not bad, and anyway we Indians don't expect things to happen to us (come to us) overnight!

And the govt will create whatever Amazon and its likes demand. A'zon is that hen that lays real gold eggs!

    So a couple of thoughts:

    1. How many Indians shop online? 30 million? 100 million? If it is the lower number, I'd mainly go into this for the future potential. Not a get rich quick scheme in any case.

    2. Is Amazon gonna be in English, Hindi, or all the 4000 languages you guys have :)

    3. If Amazon becomes very big, this is gonna hit small time merchants hard. And most of the proceeds are going to go abroad. Amazon, just like Apple, are known to pay only miniscule amounts of tax. This could actually be bad for India.

    1. Online shoppers count increasing day by day in india. Everyone now having bank account and debit cards, so most of them start purchase online. When 3 years ago, no one in my area purchased any thing via online. But now, they just using ebay and flipkart to purchase mobiles, laptops and accessories. But people here prefers showrooms for clothes and fashion accessories.

    2. Everyone, whoever attended the high school can understand english and some peoples, who not even visited school in a lifetime also able to read and understand english because it's the second language. Most of the indian products also labled in english, so amazon there's no need to be in those 4000 languages.

    3. Don't know anything related to tax.

    ^^ True, true, and true!

    also,
    3. That's the way we have to live with, when your top people have no hard-bound rules to save national interests then the foreign companies will have a ball. Can we blame them in toto?

But they will bring exotic products within reach of people who can buy. There are millions of such buyers in India, repeat buyers including... The lesser people like offline merchants can say "hell, I go back to my village before I lose my whole business and my head completely." :(

P.S.: May be, that's where we are heading... total collapse of sanity one day, may be in near future, due to no regards for the national interests. My point is, let them come to India, they are welcome, but let them come on OUR terms which can be fruitful for both parties and without breaking up the existing system to accommodate the new players.

Good to see them in a .in :)

EDIT: Just tried to make an order and to my surprise, they offer Credit Card, Debit Card, Net Banking and COD as payment options. This is indeed a good sign.
