Does anyone know if I'm allowed to use my own affiliate account to get discounts on stuff I buy? I've brought a few things from Amazon now using my links and no commissions?

It is against Amazon TOS to buy product using your own affiliate links. You won't get paid and very soon get BAN.

I ordered something from Amazon before and it picked up on my affiliate cookie. So I did get commission for the order and they paid me. However, I only did it once so they probably didn't notice. I wouldn't recommend doing it more than once though...

There's a pretty clear conflict there and Amazon don't want to be selling themselves short by giving a lower price to people who run affiliate programs. So you might, as an isolated occurrence, get some commission but it's definitely not guaranteed and it might get you booted off the program. To make a long story short you're taking a significant risk for a relatively minor reward. I wouldn't bother if I were you.
