Amazon Affiliate Site Journey

I'm starting out on a process to build several amazon affiliate (primarily) based sites to generate a monthly net of $5k as a relatively passive income.

The threads from Danny1111 and Lbrown have been very helpful in framing some of the ideas.

The initial plan is to build several sample sites in various styles to see how they convert and interact.

Danny1111 Style: More in-depth / helpful content style sites. Building 5 sites in different niches
Lbrown Style: Smaller site that drives to amazon quickly. Building 5 sites in different niches.
Authority Sites: Sites that have a broader focus around a subject. Building 3 sites in different niches
Other experiments: Playing around with other ideas /variations. We may try other affiliate programs, different plugins, etc. 5 sites or so.

I will play around with different means of promotion for each variant

Where I'm at:

I've purchased all of the domains. Some are EMD, some are not (obviously authority sites may not fit).

I've purchased several themes and I am currently modifying these, building category structures, etc.

Ordered logos, banners, etc from Fiverr for 3 of the sites

Hosting is already setup.

The plan is to roll out one of each of the four categories by the end of next week, learn from that process, and then deploy the remainder. After that it will be SEO, tweaking, and adjusting based on what we see. Once we figure out a solid plan and see what converts we'll scale from there.

Spent some time testing some the wp-robot plugin on one of the sites. I'm not going to run an auto-blog, but I'll use this to help pull in some initial products.

I like your trying a few different things - see how it performs - then scale

it's easy for me to say - do this / do that - learn this / learn that - its easy

but I do remember it took me a long time to really learn how everything works properly
and learn the skills I needed.

Right now I'm testing out a few different methods of pulling in current amazon prices. I see several sites - ie thisiswhyimbroke - where they aren't doing this, but aren't getting hit by Amazon. Not sure if there is something that I'm missing regarding their TOS, but I thought that was a requirement.

I have an almost finished site - authority style - reviews, and e-commerce mixed site. I pull prices through the product advert. API, there is a requirement to show a small detail with date and time, when the price was actual: $11.00 as of 11/19/2012 18:57 CET - Detail. The exact text for the Detail link, is in the agreement.
Not sure though if this requirement is there when you are doing without the API, but prices tend to change rapidly, so it is always a good idea to include this disclaimer. At least you are not confusing your customer.

I've been busy the last couple of days with the 9-5, but still slowly grinding away. Tried out a few services, and decided to use CMS commander. Appears to be pretty solid.

Still a bit busy with other projects. Put a video together for one of the sites, will upload some time in the future.

Been grinding away. One of the sites picked up some traffic right off the bat and made a few sales. Trying to build on that at the moment. This is really a game of numbers. I'm thinking about 100 solid sites will needed to get where I want to be. Nothing to it but to do it I guess.
