    Am i understanding this correctly

say my niche has many competitors and the number 1 guy has say like 3,000 links to his website.

if i optimize my website for the same keywords and perform offsite SEO by building 4,000 links will i overtake the first position?

That is incorrect. While I am sure many people here at BHW can give you much more detailed advice. First you need to research Page Rank (PR) Do a search here at BHW. The quality of the link is very important to your rankings. There are many other additional factors too, Such as; Domain Age, Content, Reciprocal links... ETC. Much more than just the number of links...

Well here is the background on my page
    Registered in 2000
Content is great just redid the whole website and onsite seo is present
i do not have any reciprocal links but i do have sites linking to me ( i choose not to link out at all)
my PR used to be PR1 but for some reason like 2 months ago it droped to PR0 <--- this was probably because i had duplicate content and a lot of it but all the duplicate content has been corrected just waiting for big G to give the PR back

so i ask again if i outlink my competitor will i out rank them?

Not necessarily. Again, he could have 3000 PR4 pages linking to his site, or 3000 Pr0 pages.

If you have 4000 PR0 sites linking to you and he has 3000 PR1 or PR2 sites then you're outta luck.

It matters on the PR of the sites linking from, and how much juice you're getting from those links. It's never the number. You could get 50 backlinks from PR4 or PR5 pages and beat any 4000 PR0 backlinks. :(

very interesting. What if i got a site wide backlink on a good PR forum or blog will that help me or hurt me?

It seems that they have this and thats how they have like 3500 out of 4000 links

Profile backlinks are rather powerful and tend to last a lot longer than a lot of other greyhat linking methods. Of course with what everyone else has said PR and link juice matters.

OP, You think that your competitor has exactly 3000 Links. But, please remember that, Google does not show all the backlinks. Use Yahoo or Bing to view all the Backlinks for a site :)

If he is talking about Angela and Paul profiles, then you cannot predict how long they last. These days Mods of those sites just delete profiles that look Spammy or Inactive.
