Am I the only one who purposely clicks ads on a useful site to show appreciation?

There's a lot of sites out there providing me with something for free. For example, one of the many sites that allow me to download a YouTube video in MP3 format, or an awesome online scientific calculator web2.0calc.com - for example.

Am I the only one who purposely clicks on an ad, and spends a short 30 seconds clicking through the advertisers site to make it seem like a legit click. I do this on average a few times per month when using these services (so as to not click too many times from the same IP).

I've always wondered, are you guys out there also trying to 'do the right thing' and give back to these people who are giving something to me? Or am I the only one who bothers to try and pay it forward?

Will be interesting to hear :) Personally, I am more than happy to click on the ads and let the owners make some money if they've providing me something useful, and free.

Interesting! Maybe it does bring some good karma, but it's not why I do it. Thanks for your reply :)

I sometimes click on Adsense, if the web is good and is from some IM. I recognize this from the whole appearance of the website. I am a bit happy when I know someone else will be pleased with another click :)

I do that a lot :) When I find a site really useful, I click on 1 or 2 adsense ads and 'fake' legitimity on the advertiser page...

IMO you shouldn't talk about this bringing you good karma. Sure you are doing some good for the webmaster, but you are also doing something bad to the advertiser who is paying money from his own pocket.

It seems I am not alone. Awesome. Too bad the general populace doesn't do this sort of stuff (because they probably do not thing twice about ads and who gets paid, etc).

Just my opinion but I wouldn't want people clicking on my ads to show appreciation. Blog owners have thier adsense accounts banned for that exact reason. You think you're doing them a favour but your actually not.

As an advertiser I would not be happy if people were clicking on my ads just for the fun of it.

What about the karma of the person that paid for the click?
Ignorance about the source of that money is the foundation of the liberal mind-set.

Yeah, but I also do it to show appreciation of good work. I've learned how to tell which sites are created for IM/SEO purposes online (like EMD with ads everywhere and terrible content). I applaud getting to spot #1-5.

Also, if it is a company I DON'T like then I will click an ad of theirs on Google in order to cost them money.

So do I. I don't overdo it though. Burning too much of advertiser's cash and risking the publisher getting banned

I had a few AdSense accounts banned years ago, when starting out, because of people wishing me good, but not being able to imitate a genuine person who's interested in the advertiser's service. These clicks were easily discovered by Google and the account banned, so someone wanted to do something good, but in the end messed up and took all the AdSense income away from me.

I see that there are a few of us who try and 'return the favour' but I do understand the concern about other aspects, ie - advertisers, accounts getting banned, etc.

About the accounts getting banned, I ensure I do not click the same ad (if possible) nor too often for the same website that I am visiting. I also spend a bit of time on the advertisers site, and click through a page or two.

I do understand that the advertiser must pay for the click - but when it comes to big companies, I really don't mind. After all, the person who set up the site that helped me deserves the money in my opinion, that's just how it works in my head. I don't do it to bankrupt a business, but I can see how it might all 'add up' for them. In the end, I don't do it to the local joe blows ads, it's only big corporate companies who seem to have their ads slapped in my face, and they are the ones who I think can afford a 'bad click' here or there.

    I don't mean anything bad :)

    ^^THIS.

Don't click on ads to show appreciation. You are hurting the webmaster's adsense account.

Unless you are planning to buy something from the advertiser you are lowering the webmaster's conversion rate on their Adsesne account which puts them at risk for smart pricing (lower payments per click) or an outright ban. Please stop this practice. It is not being nice.
