I have been going back and forth back and forth in my head over the last few months about which direction I should take with something, and I'd really some input.

My plan is to build an extensive local-directory, but now I can't decide if it's smarter to do a large directory or if I should do several niche directories. My dilemma is totally from an SEO standpoint, as I can't decide which strategy will do better in the long run on search engines.

My feeling is that the one large directory would probably gain more authority over the long-term, as well as the fact that locally one large site would be much more brandable than several smaller niche directories. On the other hand, the niche directories would be considered far more relevant in each of their respective niches, correct?

I would like to have one directory with a brand that I can push locally via seo, however, is it smarter to do lots of niche directories? Which strategy do you think will perform the best even 10 years from now with local search?

This dilemma has been eating me alive because I don't want to start down the wrong road with my long-term business, so any and all helpful input from my fellow blackhats is greatly appreciated.

I like how you think, but I would rather concentrate on one or the other. Doing both would make me compete against myself.

This is hard to predict which will last longer, depending on the variables such as the link building campaigns you may try, etc. But if you plan to do legit and productive, grey hat link building, I think both directories, large or niche will be quite okay.

On the contrary I think it is easier to give more authority, in search engine terms anyways, to a website wholly focused on one subject, one niche, rather than a directory just trying to fill its ranks with anything it can, you know?

A large site would be more brandable locally, yeah, it might get familiar with people, but I doubt you will have a large crowd who use your directory as their first spot to find a local business. People will be searching in Google for a business, and then come across your directory for that specific vertical they are searching in. If you plan on doing a lot of offline advertising... then a large branded site might be a better idea. Otherwise I think custom niche directory sites would cater better to your clients and audience.

10 years from now I think the smaller niche directory websites will be stronger because the content and incoming links will be, ideally, all related, the entire website will serve a single purpose, for a single niche... less scattered, and thus more powerful.

Thanks for taking the time to give me such a detailed response. At times I agree with all of your points, and at other times I see examples of the contrary, which is why I'm on the fence about it.

    Any other opinions?
