So I am just getting back into this after quick awhile away and I am a product of the "if you build it they will come" era so please bare with my noob questions...

I was doing KW research last night and found a great KW, 450,000 global monthly searches. the exact match domain name doesn't even rank in the top 100(it has been SEO for completely unrelated terms). There are no other sites with this KW in the domain even listed on the first page of results. But several very nice domains with this KW are available by adding blog, find, my, site etc to the domain.

The results only list one MAJOR player and they have the top spot.

It is a pretty competitive KW...
    Broad Match 563,000,000
    Phrase Match 1,040,000
    AllinURL 268,000
    Allintitle 521,000

Normally I wouldn't even target such a term but the return possibility is extremely high if I can rank in the top ten.

With a top placement and a 3% ctr and a known conversion rate of 1:49 I am looking at 275 sales a month.

So as the title suggests am I daff for even thinking of trying to get a top placement spot?

If I were you I wouldn't even try it. "Porn" is a nice keyword but you don't see me ranking for that. I prefer doing multiple small keywords on multiple sites because when the big dogs find your keyword, are you going to be able to outrank them?

Is it a buyer keyword (example: how to get rid of acne)? Or is it generic (example: acne)?

In the first case it may be worth a try, but to know it we should have more info on your competitors (mainly number and quality of their backlinks) on page one.

It really depends on what the top 3 look like, the rest don't matter so much.

definitely sounds like something you can try to rank for. what do you have to lose. keep it as one of your side projects and slowly build rank. if it sounds as easy as you predict it to be, you will have yourself a nice bonus on the side as you work on other projects....

This keyword doesn't sound too bad but you will have to work for it.

I would suggest you try and steal as many of your competitors backlinks as you can. The ones with a lot of spam should be easy.

It also sounds like the first two websites have pretty good on page SEO. Look at what they are doing and try and copy it.
