On my website I take caution to not over use anchor texts when I link to pages like I do when I get back links to avoid Penguin penalties.

Is this being over cautious or do you also mix up your internal anchor texts?

    Thanks

Definitely mix them up. From my experience, internal link anchors matter as well. Not by far as much as offsite anchors, sure, but they still do. So mix them up as much as possible ideally.

The good internal linking strategy will help you in ranking the site well, and also make sure that you have used the anchor text properly on each article.Good Luck.

    Wow man so helpful!

Yes, anchor text usage matters. I very rarely use exact match anchors as I prefer to use exact match for powerful backlinks. Normally a "click here to check out this guide" is what I do.
