I'm getting a few links on my competitor sites, perhaps most require me to link to their websites (Link exchange) . I don't want google to penalize me for that, so my question is : Using nofollow links would still count as Link exchanging (i don't know exactly what's the name of that in google's eyes) ? Using javascript is an option or google can still discover those links ? Does anybody know a way to place a link that google can't crawl nor recognise as link exchanging or whatever it's called ? Thanks

Yes, no-follow would count as link exchange so avoid exchanges of all sorts.

Nofollow will do the trick. If you nofollow the link, you are simply telling Google that the link isn't intended to pass link juice and therefore you didn't place it for manipulative purposes.
