Let's say I have a site with 10 images on the homepage, and I am targeting 10 keywords. Is it a good idea to place each kw as a alt tag in each image? Can it be harmful? Or should it only be done to a couple?

I'm not sure, but i don't see why it would be harmful.

IMO, I would reduce the number of targeted keywords to one main and other related, ideally. That means requiring 10 pages to target 10 keywords. If you don't have the time or will, then you can target all 10, but I still would pick as few as possible. That also depends on how competitive that niche is, how close are the keywords, how much time you have and so on...

    Good luck!

You should vary the keywords used. I give all my images keyword-related names, but I use hundreds of different terms throughout the site. It also may help to rank the images in google image search.

I do this all the time, it won't harm your site but I would use a few keywords instead of just 1 for all 10.

Hey netmoney1, let me know if this is a helpful reply.

It is a good idea to use a unique keyword or phrase in each image of your website. This will not be harmful to your SEO initiatives at all; however, there is one thing that you should make sure of. The alt tag or attribute is meant to describe what the image is because crawlers are unable to index images but use the alt text instead of the picture they are describing. You can include your 10 keywords for your 10 images but make sure that you are also describing what the images are with this attribute. Search engines will eventually weed out your images in searches if they are not relevant to a query. So for example if you place the word "headphones" on a bunch of images of kittens, this is not relevant to searchers.
