Inspect that site, and what tool did you used to find his backlinks?

Bounce rate, click through rate, time on site play a huge part in a keyword like that. 301 redirects wont show up in Yahoo Site Explorer if I am not wrong also.

what do u mean "301 redirects wont show up in Yahoo Site Explorer if I am not wrong also."

with their current status does this mean a site like this could rank for other competitive kws such as "salon equipment" easily?

There doesn't have to be some super secret.

Google has likely decided it is simply the most relevant website for the keyword.

    Simple as that.

No, I'm with you 150% bro... something major is up with this crap. This is happening to me in at least a dozen areas, and its not 1 or 2 sites, its like half the front page is riddled with these wimpy sites with no backlinks for very competitive keywords. I've lost rankings all over the place to this shit, and nothing I can find to explain it. Just a few examples are some things where I've been fiercely competing with the 5-6 people for the same keywords for over a year now, and now NONE OF US are on the front page, and its all these newb sites with worthless jibberish content and like 8 backlinks, and all us players have been pushed back to page 4 or better with like 200-300 backinks. If it were just 1 or 2 instances of this I could see some kinda 301 trickery going on maybe, but not on the level I'm seeing things... Not sure whatsup, but I have a feeling backlinks in general don't mean as much as they used too. In fact, I have even launched a couple of brand new websites and ranked them extremely easily for the exact same keywords I fought over for the past year... So, there has to be some kind of penalty for over backlinking, but I dunno about that because I SLAMMED these new sites with just as many backlinks, and ran every trick in the book to index them, and they SHOT to the top, so I dunno... possibly freshness of the backlinks found maybe?

I also conducted a little experiment you may be interested in... I had a site I was working on with a partner who ended up kinda screwing me over sorta by abandoning a joint project when it was only half done. So, I took the content that I paid for from that site and built a new site with it, but left the content on that old site as well. Then I slammed out a bunch of backlinks to my new site (which is exact dupe content as my old site, which actually had more backlinks to it probably) and it not only shot to the top, it managed to deindex the content on the original site! Soooo, here is what I think may be happening, I suspect that auto-blogs may be killing legit sites, and maybe even RSS Feeds, or article directories which may have duplicate, or very similar content may be causing havoc on things as well.

I had a client with a site of 300 plrs in dentistry i got him to page one just by a simple 1 page onpage and NO backlinking. he has like 3 backlinks to his site.

i thought it was magic but that was before panda. last augest!!!

    Hi all,
I've noticed these changes (all from my own testing so yes, I could be wrong):

On site seo and adding new, regular on site content seems to be having a much bigger effect on serps in the past few weeks as compared to backlinking which seems to be much less effective.

My competitors sites that have added new onsite content and done v little to no backlinking have gone up the serps, alot. (Significantly one of them has been putting dates on the new content and that site has gone up considerably - not sure 'til i test this how effective it may be)

A new site of mine has ranked quite high for keywords that I've done NO backlinking to whatsoever but the keywords were accompanied by keyword rich original articles.

Indexing! (Now this is possibly just happening to me )
Again in the last few weeks, a v small %age of new backlinks seem to be getting indexed, rss, ping - seems to make no difference.

    Conclusion:
It makes sense to me, from Google's point of view they're really easy and effective changes to make
    :)
