Ive noticed that if i type in a generic word like "car insurance", im getting results that are based on my regional location. It used to be that I had to type in say...."car insurance new york" or likewise in order to see local results. This behavior is being exhibited on all the 3 main search engines.

This changes the game dramatically. How can you rank for a hard keyword and show up for it everywhere anymore if this is the case? You'll only show up for said keyword in your local region when you try to check it.

I dont know how seo is going to work going forward and how confident I can be in playing the seo game if this is how the main search engines are going to now operate.

Other than the Google Places box and the Geo-targeted ads, I don't see it.

Even when I search something like "DMV" other state's sites come up first.

Google has been Geo targeted for some time now. Doesn't really change the game any. You just need to be better at picking your key terms.

why would you want to try and rank for the term car insurance any ways. I know its an example but it holds true. You should not go after key terms like this unless you have money to spend.

When someone keys in a search term googles lookes at its magic 8 ball and says ok who is the big boy local and then nation and so on. Now it is possible for the nation one to out rank the local big boy for the key term.

    Same factors still apply.
    domain age
    links
and so on and so on.

On the other hand you will start to see more key terms that are coming up for google places.

There is going to be a few big changes to this in the first and second quarter from what i hear from my bud at big G.

So you might think you have the google place deal down I would not hold your breath on it.

Anyways there is always a way around everything.
