I am having a problem with determining how many links I have and studying my backlink profile for my website. 4 sources that I have used to do this show four different things. Google Webmasters is the most accurate as far as link count, but it does not show follow vs ******** and other data. I like the data majestic shows but it is not picking up more than half my backlinks. Then other tools like Raven and SEOMoz show even fewer of the backlinks that I know I have. So I am wondering how anybody does accurate link analysis if all the tools show something different and are inaccurate. Which tool do you guys use that is consistent and accurate? I am preferably looking for a tool that is free.

Mostly backlinks checkers won't give you accurate thing. Try ahrefs.com, opensiteexplorer. mostly majesctic is somewhat accurate.

To get a more complete view of your backlink profile, you will need to use as many tools as possible: Majestic SEO, ahrefs, Open Site Explorer, WebMeUp, SEO Spyglass...

Yes! there may be difference in the result between different tools. In my experience Majestic SEO gives me most accurate result. Also, am not sure about the free tools whether they will gives you accurate result.

The point is that none of the existing tools can provide you with the exact # of your site backlinks.

Each tool that you mentioned collects backlink data using different methods and fetches links from various sources (some tools have their own backlink indexes, some take data from search engines, some use http://webmeup.com/api/introduction.html by other backlink solutions, etc.).

In case you check links for your site, Google Webmaster Tool may be the best solution, as it provides the number of site backlinks that is rather close to the real one. However, this number is also not 100% accurate.

If you want to research your competitor links (say, in order to find new sources to get links from), backlink number doesn't really matter. In this case quality of links should be considered in the first place. And in this case such tools as Ahrefs, Majestic and our http://webmeup.com/tools/backlinks.htmlwill be of great help.

WebMeUp hit the nail on the head.

Because of different tools using to different methods to detect links, you want to really use as wide a variety of tools as possible to give you the big picture.

Like everyone else stated on here, no single link tool will provide you with an accurate and complete backlink snapshot. Try Ahrefs, Majestic, Cognitive SEO and Opensite Explorer (in addition to WMT). These tools should cover all your bases.
