Have been doing some research on alibaba, to get a general gist of costing a few product lines.

However, the sellers want massive MOQs and a charging greater than retail price. WTF?

I know its a scammers playground, but how does one source decent suppliers, at a fair price?

Does one have to attend trade fairs around asia, to find reputable suppliers.

Maybe naive of me, but on a lot of product lines, I would assume that paying 30% of retail price, whole be about right for wholesale price, as you need to add on taxes/import duties/selling costs etc.

Sample request before do any massive deal.

Remember this, and also keep in mind, never use WU or any other direct money transfer method to finish your first deal.

I am from china, I did many many business on alibaba(native and forein). There are some really good and cheap suppliers(cheaper than any other supplier from other counties), but also many scammers.
There is a saying in China "Money comes from danger". If you want to know how to find good reputable suppliers, Mhh, it is a good question.Just as you ask here "how to make money?". I can give you some advices, but finally you need to test by yourself.

Just remember "Open your eyes, grasp your wallet". You can dig the real gold from china, otherwise, you will lose everything.

I did this but still seemed a cartel and got poor prices.

Example Wholesale price of 500units > Than Amazon/Ebay price

    Just seems to much risk

I havent tried this, but you arent bypassing the middleman, but going to him with this method. The source is invariably a factory in Asia.

Yeah, I've noticed that the prices they list on Alibaba are even way lower than the price they give you when you contact the manufacturer. For example, I was looking at LED light bulbs and there were advertised wholesale prices listed of $2 to $4 for a particular bulb. Then the manufacturer sent a price list which had the item at $12.90! I contacted 15 manufacturers. 4 replied and all 4 had prices way too high to make any real profit. I'd be left with about a 4 or 5% margin is all selling them on my site or through Amazon. At that point I'm better off just creating an Amazon niche store!

Yes, it is most of the time like that

Alibaba is not really a cheap place and if you get a supplier to quote you a price you really like, the supplier may not be a legit one. It's hard to find a good one for sure.

Sourcing is an art and in most cases takes time effort and money before you actually get any useable results.

But, of course, there are other places on the globe to buy Chinese made goods for better then alibaba prices without the high MOQ - Bangkok is one, Manila is better.
