I am still pretty new to the IM world (~1ish month) and this is my first real attempt at something that wasn't spamming porn pictures. I will try to update this thread daily with both my success and failures.

My method is attempting to launch a niche site that I have "branded" and am using across multiple social networks instead of fretting over SEO. The logic is: Get followers in social media, Google notices social signals, then when the site becomes popular, people eventually Google it, site gets ranked 2x. Once I know my target audience I will monetize it, probably after a week or two.

I have a logo, a good name and a very popular niche with new content each day. My site will launch within the next day with the actual content. My goal is to build this up slowly, monetize it and see how far I can go. I figure the worst case scenario is that I can sell everything to someone on a site like Flippa as all accounts are connected to the site's domain and a site related gmail. Being banned isn't a concern because this niche is wanted, not adult related, there is nothing blackhat about it and I am not spamming.

I am also thinking of this as an experiment to better learn social media.

Looks like this start is going to be even slower than I anticipated. The only really good thing is that all of my followers are real, my content is original and that I am not spamming. I hope it picks up after a week or so. I also decided to make the website open as of a few hours ago, but I won't post the actual content on social networks until Saturday afternoon when people will see it.

Things almost always take longer than planned. Just keep plugging away.

I am doing Facebook. I am trying to get into related groups to post. Also trying to figure out a way to get any views on Pinterest because I do not think I have a single one.

Twitter hates me, and I found out how to see followers on Instagram. Not really sure at this point how to promote Pinterest, Youtube nor Facebook. Everything has to be white hat.

Good luck to you! May I ask why everything has to be white hat?

Thanks for the luck! I want the site to last a year or so and might sell it. If I used blackhat techniques it might get a bad rep, get de-indexed, have crappy links, etc. So I am trying to make all of my traffic organic and from legitimate sources. I'd rather have an under-performing website that is safe and stable than a churn and burn that might get popular but die soon after. This is mostly a learning process about how to market a site on social media and what people like.

Thanks for posting your progress. I'm in a similar situation as you - trying to do everything by the books. I need to focus on social media more for sure. Any tips on social media strategies?

Well.. I originally meant this to be a small side project, but it turned out to be beyond a full time job. That is a problem because I am often pressed for time, this isn't even monetized yet and it most likely does not have great potential in the first place. It is also a really saturated niche and there's no way I could compete with any of the current people in it, which is why it was an experiment. It takes too much time for an experiment though and I have no time for anything else.

I learned that Instagram isn't worth the hassle (lost one follower, leaving me two whom I had followed so it's the follow for follow crap), that I have no idea how Pinterest works, Twitter is legit to some degree, Tumblr is follow heaven, that Youtube is probably an SEO of its own (100% sure I did this right but never got any non-site related views) and that Facebook takes time (only just got accepted into a group that's related to the niche). Oh yeah, Reddit isn't even worth the effort of making an account. In my niche spammy blogs trying to sell products and services make it to the top, but my actual OC was downvoted. The only comments I ever got were negative. I had forgotten how negative Reddit was and funnily enough this forum, despite being blackhat and money related, is a lot nicer than Reddit is.

All in all? A waste of time and $11. The site only got 6 visitors despite putting out quality content. I'm dumping it because there's many other ideas I have that count net more money in a shorter amount of time. I guess what I really took from this experience was to research things better and not underestimate how much work things take.

Thanks for reading my super short journey, guys~

No idea other than follow people to start your following on Tumblr with following people in a related niche and research keywords in general. All of the social networking sites have hashtags and you can find their rankings from 3rd party sites.

The big guys social media experts say that you should follow people in order to follow back some people.
