I got a notice from these jokers today in an attempt to collect a debt I owe from Verizon. The problem is, I've never done business with Verizon. They used my actual phone number on the bill (registered to T-mobile) and when I went to their site, I was supposed to enter my SS# for access. I entered a wrong one first...no-go. I entered the right one and I was in! This means they have my SS# as well...

I did a search of them online and it seems they've done the exact same thing to other people and they actual neg your credit as well. How can they do that if you don't owe them anything?

I sent them a nice threat through their contact form. Who wants to help me hit 'em?

ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

When you entered your SSN, you verified that they had the right one!

You just got your identity stolen, Dude, so batten down the hatches!

You got PHISHED!

I have heard about this scam before. They usually keep the amount owed small enough to get people to just pay it to get rid of the head ache. If they have your name, and ss# they can make up the rest. The only other explanation is if you really had an old account, or co-signed account with Verizon that was owed, and sold to a 3rd party without your knowledge. If you never had a Verizon account, then you should write to the 3 credit bureaus disputing this account, and they will send a notice requesting proof to this company which I seriously doubt will not take the time to respond, and you will have it removed from your credit in the next 30 days.

They are probably after the person who had the number before you, they have you confused with someone else or someone used your identity to open a Verizon account and skated on it.

This could take a while to straighten out for sure.

There are ways to get it done as as you have no verifed with them, you should contact them BY PHONE and find out what the deal is.

After you confirm that the debt is not yours, tell them that and send them a letter with DELIVERY CONFIRMATION, demanding that collection attempts cease and taht this be removed from your credit report.

This for starters; see where it goes from there.

I didn't enter the whole thing, they just asked for the last 4 digits. So they already had it. I confirmed it, but that doesn't matter. Anyways, I'm just going to contact the the F.B.I...I have an uncle that works there.

So if they have your SS that means this debt should be on your credit report, did you check that out? Its actually not uncommon to have negative information on your credit report that does not belong to you.

If that's the case then contacting the F.B.I. won't do much inless your Identity was stolen which could be possible. Life Lock protects you against Identity theft, that might be of use to you.

So if this information is on your credit report which is likely you would have to challenge the credit bureau's in order to get this debt removed from your credit report. Just contacting the collections agencies might not be enough nor will most care about a threat from a consumer.

If your having trouble getting this info removed from your credit report and eliminating this debt you should check out some credit repair forums, go to a credit repair agency, or possibly a lawyer, but a good credit repair firm would be a more suitable choice. If you're interested I can recommend the one I used in the past with success.

I guess you've been living under a rock. The Life Lock CEO who published his social security number everywhere has had his identity stolen a few times already:

No, I wouldn't know that because Im not a news junkie. And the article you posted which states his identity has been stolen really doesn't matter.

He clearly gave his SS# out on TV, what do you expect? Did you actually believe that wouldn't happen? You'd be naive to think that. Nothing in life is 100% gauranteed.

The point of lifelock(which you can do for free yourself) is to help prevent identity theft. Obviously the average person doesn't go around advertising there SS# to everyone. And if its stolen due to Lifelocks mistakes you get a 1million dollar protection gaurantee.

And if the original posters ID was stolen, it's possible that would not have happened had he had Identity Theft Protection which is why I recommended it. With something as serious as your SS# its better to be safe then sorry...
